MTBc Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 During the week, I sometimes ride in to work from the cradle (Gauteng), and haven't had any issues. My partner was keen to do the same, but being a lady and more vulnerable, her family is strongly against it. The ride in is mostly on footpaths along busy routes, with constant traffic. I was wondering how many hubbers ride alone, and where / when. From a safety aspect, its a must to ride in groups, especially with all the bike jackings going on, but thought it would be interesting to see some stats on how many lone-riders there actually are.
Eldron Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I use a system called practinoid. Practical enough not to let crime dictate my life, paranoid enough to avoid what I consider high probablility of getting 'jacked spots. JGR, TopFuel, hvh and 10 others 13
Smolly Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Ride on my own.On Sunday I was chased by hunting dogs and had a few issues with a cow.On one ride I chased a poacher on the local game farm
JGR Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I never stress about being alone on the road. I would say I cycle alone 99% of the time. On table mountain im quite nervous with all the recent attacks and will now only go in a group
Iron Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) Commute every day ( almost ) . like Eldron says , be smart . Edited June 11, 2013 by Iron divernick, BogusOne, MTBc and 1 other 4

reteid Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 most of the time alone.but then again i had a nice time with 40 other people in a shuttle day on contermanskloof over the weekend.
Smolly Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 you dont count.... you live far far away, far away from all our nonsense. Just for that, I deserve a half day
kosmonooit Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Mostly solo: back roads and pavements where possible. The danger is mostly motorists, you have to be extremely streetwise. MTBc and kgostis 2

cowboylegs Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 It is ridiculous that you cant do your hobby for fear of being mugged, raped or killed! This isn't quality of life - immigration here we go! lerouc and MTBc 2

Not sure I would want my loved one out on her own ( if I was a guy) even if its along busy roads. Unfortunately we do need to let common sense dictate some things. Its just the times we live in. Thats a call ou both need to make. Is it worth it? My 2c worth. mrbaker 1

T-Bob Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Depends if you count the voices in my head... Nah, seriously, I ride road mostly alone and or with a couple of buddies and depending on how we're feeling then we're trying to drop each other and end up alone for part of it any way. Dirt wise seems to be hardly a place in CT where you can ride alone! MTBc 1
Azonic Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I hit the road around 4:30 am and ride on the road in pretty remove areas. Rarely a car comes past, no-one around. I find it allot safer than riding in urban areas. If I see a silhouette walking on the road ahead of me, I take out my stun gun and go into possible fight mode untill I'm well past. Usually get home around 6:30 or so. MTBc and ChUkKy 2
