I find good quality sprockets hard to come by whereas chainrings more common and actually cheaper. Is the chainlength affrected more by varying the chainring size? But why not get a ss frame or a tensioner. .. then you can use whatever is comfortable..
SteveS Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 What gear ratios do most of you use? I run a 32 chainring front, and vary the sprocket 16 or 18. With 16 i find some climbing just too tough, but with the 18 again the climbing is fine but then i spin out on a flat road. . 17?

the nerd Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 32/19 - Rigid 29er... but mainly ride at Thaba so it works... Also once you have a good spread of rear sprockets you are golden. This also depends on the crank you using, eg: i am using an xtr m960 which makes chainrings difficult to get hold of.

Got a dh crankset off crc which came with a 38. Currently running a 20 on the back but just riding round the suburbs streets. Was thinking of keeping the 20 on the back and just going smaller chainrings to lighten the ration.

Hairy Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Lone Ranger, the 32x16t on a 26er is nice. Currently running a 32x20t on the inbred 29er and am starting to feel strong enough to give the 18t a spin again. A 19t would have been great, but I could not find any when I was looking.
