Men Over 40 Should Think Twice Before Running Triathlons (Bloomberg)

Not a great article in my opinion, there is an increased risk of heart attack in the swim yes, but this is often not due to cardiac health alone, but is exacerbated by a number of factors such as a too tight wetsuit, intake of caffeine, panic, in the water etc... There is some good stuff on slowtwitch about deaths in the swim leg of triathlons, worth a read.

The changes made to swim starts are good, self seeding, increased boats and lifesavers in the water etc.... a number of the deaths probably could have been if the changes now being made were in place.

Is this an American study where heart disease is more rife anyways - factors such as people competing through illness ect is not being considered.

You have more chance of being hit by a car training or being in an accident on the way to an event than at an event ....

Stop tampering with my excuse...

Jokes aside

Its probably got some truth to it (the study) shite happens as you get older and now days older people are behaving as if they are a lot younger.

But what the hell, at least you die happy

That's the trouble with endurance sports - the demand on the old heart. And joints. And digestive tract. And so on.

But, hell yeah, the endorphins and a clunky medal. Carpe diem!

The human condition is worse than anything we do whilst suffering from the human condition.

The human condition ALWAYS ends in tragedy!

Well the heart is a muscle ... surely if it is excerised it will adapt and get stronger. I think anyone red lining the HR could come unstuck not just 40+

Perhaps the people who have done nothing for years and then enter on a corporate entry ect are most suseptable to heart conditions

Also maybe to many potions, powers and epo as that age group is more flsuh (generally) than the younger groups?

So many variables, so little evidence besides saying hey 4 guys died, all over 40. Must be a trend.

anyways I heard everyone is CH lives to like 108 anyways

It would be interesting to know how many of these fatalities are related to insufficient rest/sleep/recovery. I'm sure a lot of these guys were high-powered execs, in stressful jobs where late nights and long hours are par for the course and sleep/rest isn't always top priority. They are normally driven and very competitive individuals, so will push their training even when rest is needed. Coupled with the "time pressures" of married/family life and advancing age this is a potential problem.

There was this top Indian exec, in his 40's, who was an avid marathon runner who died a few years ago and his passing was attributed to basically all of the above.

I'm going to be very very careful from now on, I've always had a mortal fear of dying "from all of the above". ;)

I can speak from experience. Let me start by saying that I am a fairly fit person but don't over do it in anyway when I am out training. On 6 April 2013 at the KZN Downhill Event, I went into cardiac arrest about 30 minutes after my second times run. I could feel there was something not right but refused to believe that I had gone into cardiac arrest. It wasn't the norm where you experience the pain in your left arm and then clutch your arm and fall over and die, for me it was almost 2 hours of excruciating chest pains until I could get to a hospital. The things I went through and felt during those two hours I would not wish on my worst enemy. I am one of the very very lucky ones who survived it and came out with no perminant heart damage. The eventual cause was due to a blood clot caused by my red blood cell count being to high. I had no cholesterol, stress or high blood pressure issues. I never knew about my blood count problem and took a cardiac arrest for me to establish this. The more scary part for me was when I was in ICU they wheeled in a 22 year old girl who suffered the exact same as I did whilst out running. One thing I learnt from this is that you just don't know who could be next to go into cardiac arrest. It can happen to anyone, big or small, fat or thin, old or young...you just don't know. Almost all cardiac arrests are caused due to blood clots and they sneak up on you like a stalker!!! If you can, go get a CT scan to check for any blood clots in your system, it could save your life.

Hubbers be weary before you start flaming this particular Hubber.

I think if the running part of a triathlon was first and then the swimming there will be less problems .Firstly, less dangerous water crowding, warmup on the road as opposed to water is safer and if the athlete has a problem ,they can stop safely as opposed to drowning when they stop swimming .Starting an event with pumping adrenalin ,cold muscles and cold water with an anxiety induced tachycardia is just a bad idea
