My 2c.

A few years ago i used to donate a lot of money via Organisations.

For reasons i wont mention here, it became apparent that a lot of these (not all) organisations have so much admin costs and red tape that quite a large portion of the funds never reached the end benefactor.

I made a decision to only donate to causes where i could be sure most, if not all, of my money went to the person/cause that i wanted it to go.

I am a big fan of helping others, but i request that if we go this route of a hub fund, that we keep it as simple as possible to ensure that the money reaches the right people.

Perhaps a monthly cause and poll is the way to go, after all, if it is not a cause you agree with, you can sit that month out and donate to the ones you want to.

another suggestion is to possibly have a forum section dedicated to causes, a thread per cause created by either the person in need or a friend etc, and we decide which ones we wish to donate towards?

Either way, i think regardless of the format, this is a great initiative. Well Done Eldron and Slow.

So after a few days mulling...

Agreed - it needs to be as simple as possible whilst being as transparent as possible.

How about a monthly poll at the beginning of the month - people then decide if and how much they want to donate. At the end of the month we hand over the funds - if they're local we head to a restaurent/venue for a meal (each pay for our own) and hand over the cash.

Combined hub meet'n'greet and charity event. Kinda like the corporate stuff but a little more blue collar :-)

I'm happy to be the collection portal. This of course needs a fair amount of trust from thehub - I can make all donations public and tally up etc to keep tranparency - those not wanting publicity can be "A nonny mouse".

Everyone post your thoughts and we'll start moulding final T&Cs...

I think its a great idea. You know hear of so many people having an opportunity to participate in some or other world championship and they just cant afford to do it.

Right. So.

Fire is about to board the aircraft and the hubfund seems to be closed on that account.

It is a week from the end of the month.

Please start posting your "cyclists in need" and I'll put a poll together for a public vote. A couple of lines should do (who, what, where, why, when etc).

I'll put in the first R500 and we'll take it from there.

Here's an idea. You guys have seen Kickstsrter? Google it, I'm on my mobile now.

Anyways, it's crowdfunding. Let's say I want to start a project, and determined that I need R10, 000 to fund it. Then investors (public) can help fund it.

We can do something similar, where specific charity cases are created as individual projects and one can pledge to the one you want to. The person who created the project is responsible for handling the funds and reward or keeping the investors up to date

Given the great support for the lad in need (Waynes thread), it was suggested that we possibly have a re look at Eldrons idea.

Do you guys like the idea of a hub fund? it would work wonders for a cause like this.

We could also help cyclists in need when such arises.

What say you guys?

personally i like to know/judge the amount of help i can/will pass forward on to people in need, and i like to "know" a bit more about where the money is going to

dont get me wrong i helped with getting the hubber overseas(FIRE)

i help a few hubbers here and there when they are randomly asking for stuff

AND I HELPED WITH WAYNE/WYATTS CURRENT DRIVE

but PERSONALLY i dont like funds as there is always the story of WANT/NEED

AND THEN WHO DECIDES WHAT IS NEEDED apposed to what is wanted

in a IDEAL WORLD YES GREAT IDEA, FOR NOW I WILL TRY HELP AS I GO ALONG

you ok with the idea for a cyclist in need concept ? Argus is just round the corner ...

Hey, I offered you my Vipa! (on loan)

I'm very much in favour of supporting and helping people in need. Genuine need, though. Was cool to help Scott, get Fire and the other couple (can't remember all the details now) to the events abroad and help a kid deliver food to the SPCA. Sounds quite simple typing it out like that, but to them it meant a heck of a lot.

As long as it's transparent and doesn't involve an overly-complicated system to run and administer it.

Once you start dishing out funding like Lotto there are going to be upset people and it can backlash against the Hub.

I like P.A.K's Idea of Crowdfunding, the parties can canvas and state their case on the Hub and you contribute what you want on Kickstart. Mark Allen even launched his Triathlon book on Kickstart, so the concept is sound.

I agree with this sentiment. I rather take each request for assistance on a case by case basis and decide if I want or can assist.

I know this has been punted elsewhere (where I've dropped a some trailing zeros) but I prefer to donate directly to anybody I feel like donating to.

Sending moolah through a few layers allow other people to direct MY money to causes I might not feel particularly aligned to (not that they are non-deserving causes).
