Crime on the up in Cape Town

The best early warning system is 2 Jack Russells that sleep in the house. The problem then is what to do when they go crazy. They fear nothing and will take on a threat even if they are in danger.

Bull Terriers are better at attacking, as are Pit Bulls but they need the wake up call.

I have had the Pleasure? at seeing what a threatened Bull does to an intruder trying to get away. The perp is crippled for life.

The Cape was our last stand in SA. After being here for some really good years we have looked at our last option. Its not for everyone, but when we had considered crime stats, rape amd murder stats, socio economic reforms in place, state of our education system, upcoming political leaders, our ranking as most corrupt country in the world, the drop in our priduction of foods and slow move towards being more of an food import vs export based country, the state of our electricity supply and how that may affect our economy moving forward, the poor governance and lack of management of our state, health system, police, etc and many other factors related to what those in power elude to with regards redistribution if wealth, there really is only one option for us to give our children a stable life, something we would not have had if our folks had not left Zimbabwe. So we are about 2 month away from packing our container and moving down under.

It's called a fullstop. Period.

This reminds of a scene in Django, where the one farm owner (leonardo di caprio, lets his dogs on one of the slaves)... shoo!

A few years ago I got a late night knock on the front door (reminding me of the bad old times). There, behind the security gate, stood a prison-tattood and very scaly looking character, who informed me that he saw someone trying to break into my car outside, but not to worry, that he had already given the guy a few slaps to chase him away. I thanked him and asked him who he was and what brought him to my neighbourhood. Turned out he was the pimp for the prostitutes a block up the road. He hangs in the shadows and makes sure his girls are safe. He also chase away competition and other criminals, because he doesn't want the cops there to slow his business down. The next morning, in daylight, I saw that the few slaps he doled out must have been quite substantial, because there was a fair amount of blood on the side of my car and the pavement. We have very few crime issues in my street, partly thanks to this most unlikely of guardian angels. You never know who is looking after you, so be friendly to everyone. (True story)

DJR: that is an interesting dilemma, like using herpes to kill cancer. The problem is, they are both problems. So he has effectively bought your silence.

if there ever was a sign we live in f'd up times...

Walked into my parents room at 7pm on Friday night to find a guy standing there! He made his escape using the same way he got in... through a window frame where they removed a piece of glass, that space is only 22 x 26 cm!

Had him by the legs for a while, half way out the window while his friend was trying to help him out (think his friend was to big to get inside!) unfortunately he got away!

Strangely enough my Giant Trance was outside the front door, still drying after my ride and they didn't touch it!

Heaven forbids that i EVER trap a guy halfway throught my window...I cannot write here what i would do to the trapped guy...don't mind doing some jailtime for those actions!! It will be worth it...

22 break ins in 6 months - at what stage did they reveal this fun stat?? you must have got the house for a steal.

Another story for another thread. And yes, I got the house for so cheap its criminal. Ironic that there where not even a total of 22 break ins since 2001 when most of the current neighbours bought their houses (old Somchem / Denel manager houses).

One neighbour (34yrs old) grew up here and had his first break in two weeks ago (I only moved in last week Tuesday). Heck, this guy does not even have spikes or electric fencing and his yard borders a rather dodgy walk way.

Seller was also renting out the house and tenant was evicted last week Sunday.

Not my wall, need to take photos but its sad we need to start looking like Jozie. I'm now in corner of Bonaero & Voortrekker in Bridgewater (can see the station platform from my kitchen).

Funny that the criminals where not the usual suspects from the station. Would rather tell you offline who they where as there are still criminal investigations. Lets just say me moving in resulted in the problem being one step closer to resolved.

  got it...yes, an unoccupied house always looks like an easy target...

Just got a call from a person (disabled and living at back of his mother's little RDP house in a low-income area) who I financially assist from time to time....

Told me they are sitting witout water as the tik koppe had stolen their stop tap connection and the municipality has been unresponsive for two weeks now! They desperately need to re-install re-connect water as he / they cannot live without any water services...

My point being - crime does not know any borders / skin colour / areas etc. etc. even the poorest of the poor are subjected to theft. (if it's got value - someone will take it!!)

True

Our nanny is more a victim of crime than what we are. Difference is I can afford to secure my property and pay for armed response.

Crime is up all over...... except on the stats.

There is a military exercise on in PE with SANDF and US Army. The extra visible vehicles have done nothing to drop the crime.

This is a friends fb status this morning.

3.30am wake up to go outside, black man standing on my 2nd floor balcony. He grabs me by the throat tells me to shut up.. I shout for my son. He and I fight the guy. I turn see the 2nd guy who shoots at us.. bullet hole in wall. Richcochets into the house. Third guy waits then nonchalantly then walks away with the other. WHAT THE EFFING HELL?????? My son could have died. I just cant cope anymore.

I see the SANDF may have to sell its Gripen's and some if not all of its helicopters, especially the Agusta A109's as they cant afford to keep, fly or maintain them.

Budget cuts have meant there is just no more money for the military.

My father once caught a guy halfway through one of his windows. My father is a big man. That perp nearly drowned in the swimming pool. Another perp years later also tried his luck, he got caught between the wall, the massive dog and my father's fists.

Weirdly, after both guys got a hiding the police opened cans of whoopass on the perps as well.

Friend of mine lives in rondebosch. They broke into the yard 3 times in two weeks to steal his dads building material. Then the fourth time they came into the house.

He woke up hearing them downstairs and he and his wife with their 3 month old baby is upstairs.

He made a noise not wanting to go confront them and they luckily left. Taking tv, laptop and the babys cot!

Keep the Lab in the house at night ,that should give you warning if there is movement outside & don't feed him at night.Stay safe

I've heard of a few people suggest this. Such a silly idea. Something like moving your dogs sleeping place to the front of the house is a much better idea
