Here is a tough favourite:

400 easy warm-up

main set:

300m on 4min

2 times 150m on 2min

3 times 100m on 1min20sec

repeat times the above 900m times 3

400 easy cool-down

Total 3.5km

Main set is continuous so no rest between broken 300s but as much rest as you'd like between sets.

Nice looking set but sorry I don't follow this bit, can you expand on it:

His main set is made up of a 900m set that you do 3 times

the 300m on 4min, plus the 2 x 150m plus 3 x 100m is 900m

 

do it three times then cool down.

You make me laugh. The rest just hurts reading it.

Ya those times arent for ants. Also the way I read it he means leaving on 4min...more than a little quick for me

I think I am going report all of you maniac swimmers for inflicting deliberate psychological pain on us middle of the packers. You don't need to make us feel any more average than we already are!

my set:

get pool cover off. slowly walk into cold water. Dive to make the pain go away quickly. feel zero gravity for a moment while under water. come up - grab beer. Sit on the step and relax. Repeat as many times as needed.

I normally swim with a club, but they only start again in a week's time. So here is a half an hour set I did during the holidays to keep myself from going completely bad:

 

3 x 200m warmup, 10sec rest between

6 x 100m free on 1:55, last length hard (I swim in a 25m pool)

6 x 50m free on 55sec, first length hard

6 x 25m free on 30sec, hard

100m loosen

 

Total distance 1750m

The reverse of this is that feeling having half the field pass you on the bike ....

Ja, some of these guys.... My arms start hurting just looking at some of these sets :/

 

I normally swim with a squad, but when I'm on my own I do one of the following:

 

Set 1

100m warm up

20x100m coming in under 1:30, leaving on 2:00.

200m cool down

 

Set 2

100m warm up

6x500m coming in at 8:15-8:30, leaving on 9:30.

200m cool down

 

Very boring, I know, but when I'm on my own I keep losing track of complicated sets, especially when I get tired.

 

I'll step up the sets when I get closer to full IM.
