Hijack on : Who has done the Crator Cruise Ultra with a single speed and can you recommend a gear ratio for me? Going to try and make my virgin SS race the Crator Cruise. Hijack Off.

29er?

34x16 I reckon. Ride a few races/training rides first though - the Crater Cruise is a flippin long race - horrible on those loooooong flat roads if you have the wrong gear.

Strava is kewl for a bit of fun and as a great motivational tool but nothing beats putting burying the pin and hurt in your mates in a sprint or on a climb.

I'm looking forward to when you can integrate your past stava times with your live ride on a garmin / other gps and see how you're going against your best sections.

Not my Idea of a fun day on an SS. There are alot of other races better suited to SS.

Neil Frazer did it on an SS and after 5 km he popped out the back of the A batch like he was going backwards. (not sure of his gearing)

You either gotta spin out for 90km and climb well for 16km or,

You gotta be geared for the flats and walk the climbs.

either way its not gonna be a tough race just not gonna be fun. Cause you gonna be overtaken ALOT.

Thanks. 26er I'm afraid. After reading you and JC's comments I will reconsider.

Will do the Farmasutra then

Even on a geared bike its not all that much fun. Miles and miles of corrugated dirt road. Saw Neil last year on the SS rigid and felt for him.

The science of Strava segmant leaderboard, a breakdown of the stats - you can take this as gospel (honest)

We have 1000 riders!

500 don't know it's a segmant

250 don't care that it's a segmant despite knowing it's one

150 don't push themselves because they're actually enjoying their ride

75 have ridden significant kms before they get to that point

20 have only ever ridden it once and don't know the intracacies of it

5 ride it all the time and know it like the back of their hand because it's their KOM and even if they have to drive to the base of it and warm up on their trainers - they are going to win damnit, win, win win!!!! :whistling:

Hahaha! Enjoyed your post! A lot of truth in there! Just not sure about the accuracy of the number distribution though!

I hear you but I like a challenge. Did the Crator last year and the corrugated sections was bad! Maybe do the Ultra with a geared suspension bike and Sundays half ultra with my Rigid SS

93.25% of all stats are made up anyway.

You don't need Strava if you already know you are the fastest out there

Darnit! I knew I should have worn my "I'm faster than you" kit on my Saturday Spruit ride...

That said, the only riding clothes I had with me weren't much different and I did feel a little too "factory"
