Combined testing at Jerez with both WSBK and MotoGP going on at the moment.

Can we just appreciate that Johnny Rea (on an even further dumbed down superbike) went faster in the test than Rossi's pole position time this year? #pleasegivethismanayamaham1

Interesting article on A&R to explain it.

Basically weather and tyres.

I remember a few years ago when Steve Hislop lapped Donington quicker on a BSB bike than the MotoGP bikes that raced that year. That was impressive, on a 996 if I recall.

Those WSBK's, the only thing which is roughly the same as the road bikes, are the fake lights painted on them. They are closer to motogp bikes than to the roadbikes they are supposed to be.

Fair enough, but I'll raise you one:

Valentino Rossi's race laps (from April when the weather was nice), vs. Johnny Rea's race similation (in this last test)

Top 3 Positions in the race

1. Rossi +0

2. Lorenzo +2.386

3. Marquez +7.087

That's right. His pace was fast enough over 20 laps to finish third. THIRD!

Why do we have to ruin a MotoGP thread with that guys name?

Is there not a SBK thread where we can talk about knobheads like Rea, Foggy etc

We already have to pretend that Cal is something special on this thread ;)

I hear you, and read the article but weather and track conditions make a MASSIVE difference.

If you read the A&R article they expand on just how difficult it is to ride a MotoGP bike compared to WSBK.

You also need to take into account the ZX10R Rea rides is a well sorted machine, while the MotoGP guys were dealing with new Electronics and new tyres and lets be honest, the Michelins in the first half of the season were a bit iffy.

Rea has had a ride or 2 on the HRC Honda and while he wasnt totally useless, he didnt exactly set the timing charts alight.

The 2 series are very different. Out of the 3 riders, mentioned in your article, I honestly believe Davies would be the best bet at being competitive in MotoGP.

Except that if you have 300,000 Euros, you can buy Johnny Rea's bike. You need another 1.7 million+ for the prototype.

Best ever lap of Jerez was Lorenzo in 2015 (a 1.37.910 lap), these were his words after:

"Setting the new pole position record is unbelievable. I rode many impressive lap times in my career, but this one is very special."

“A 1'37.9 with these temperatures is very impressive and I am very satisfied. I didn't risk too much in acceleration because you can injure yourself if you crash in a highside, but I pushed a lot more in the braking and maximum lean and it worked.

You have to acknowledge that a superbike coming within 0.811s in "less than ideal conditions" is phenomenal.

Also, your assessment of JR's performance when he subbed for Stoner is quite profound. 8th at Misano first time on the bike and 7th at Aragon (Hayden finished 15th this year when subbing for Marc VDS) ahead of a certain Mr. Valentino Rossi.

Yes, there is a vast amount of difference between the bikes and it's unfair to compare the two of them, but this shows that MotoGP bikes are not the pinnacle of what prototype motorcycles should and could be. They're spending THAT much money, for what? Shitty tyres? I don't get it.

Edit: Another worthy read

  • 1 month later...

FORZA VALE E YAMAHA!!!

Ducati will be unveiling today as well.

Going to be interesting with Lorenzooo on it.. :P

Except that those bikes are actually 2016 painted in the 2017 colour scheme. However, apparently they look almost identical, but everything has been changed under the dress.
