I dare the following - Driving from Klipheuwel to Durbanville this morning I counted 8 cyclist riding on the tar road. The ration between mountain bikes (with knobblies) and any form of tar road equipped bicycle is 8:0. Can any dirtrider please explain to me what they are trying to do? Its like the bleddy valies driving SUV's. What's the purpose of owning a mountain bike - (not cheapies. The one dude had an S-Works (black and red)) if you gonna dress in lycra and waste the bike on tar?

I ride my MTB (sometimes with knobblies(Crossmarks), mostly with semiknobblies(Bontrager CR1)) on tar to work and back, albeit in Pretoria and not Slaapstad. Reason(s) being that you may see me on the tar every now and again, but I also hit a lot of dirt in between. Knobblies are more robust and can withstand the crap lying on our roads, as well as the potholes and ditches etc that dot the landscape.

Are you really THAT bored to try and pick a fight? Go read pinkbike or something.

I commute on my mtb. Easier to hop off the road or on and off sidewalks. Also as Riaan said, there's a lot of debris on the road and I don't feel like fixing flats every other day. Which would happen because it's dark out and the lights can only pick up so much.

actually, what's really funny, is at the keoberg reserve, the cyclists going back home direction Duinefontein, they actually prefer riding on the tar than ride on the verge which is in most places, at least wide enough for two. When a car comes, they swerve onto the dirt, but back onto the tar like their lives depend upon it. I verstaan nie. for lolworthy.

That said, i ride my MTB on the road as well when not lus for taking the racer out. Sometimes slicks, sometimes knobbies. Who cares really.

I train with my mtb on tar road.

I use the mtb because due to many reasons:

- time constraints, so I need to make the most of every ride

- my training partner is weaker at this moment so He is on the road bike, and me on the MTB, so it evens out nicely

- Also, less likely to get a puncture

- I like my mountainbike more than my roadbike

- It really irritates the crap out of the roadies if you can ride them off your wheel

My Roadbike is basically stationary on the IDT for almost a year now.

I only have 1 bike.. If I want to ride on the weekend without going too far from home, I ride around the neighbourhood. Tar roads, complexes, no cycle tracks etc. . I have a MTB with knobblies.. There are no dirt tracks where I live. Suggestions of what I must do? Should I have a spare sets of road tyres so that every time I want to go for a ride I must change the wheels?

And on the odd encounter I beat them roadies on my single speed mtb. The look on their faces is priceless.

And when you dont beat them you can blame your gear ratio! Hahaha
