I'd be much less happy if I worked hard in races this year and ended lining up next to some guy (basically me) who'd done nothing, and just got seeded off last year's ride Agreed, and then there is the flipside. If the guys around you are stronger than you, you will get dropped sooner or later and end up doing the last 20kms on your own, not fun either. Whats the point of telling your chommies "hey look at me, I am starting in VA" only to be spat out the back up the first climb. Starting with people who have the same index as you is beneficial for all. You got that index in the same way as everybody else did. If the group you are seeded with doesn't have a sexy enough letter or doesnt give you club ride bragging rights, sorry, train harder, race more. It took me a while to realise there is no magic oil that some of our fast/faster club guys have which I don't - they just train harder or smarter than me. I can live with that, we each choose as much or as little and that's what determines our times ...
