Litterbugs....should we name them?

1) Fair enough, it is, but that does not mean you have to partake.

2) I never assumed anything, read my post, I said "had you stopped" which implies exactly that, an unknown.

3)Thats fine, but I never saw it, and as far as I can see no one else here did either, I also see no evidence here to substantiate your accusation, so from my point of view you are acting as judge, jury and executioner on a public platform without giving the other the right of recourse, thats not in the spirit of fair play.

Dont misunderstand my post though, I am not justifying littering, I simply cannot justify denigrating another person on a public platform without showing any significant proof of the accusation.

HAD you stopped, means I did not stop!

I had a witness, but dont know him. You all want to stop littering.....and many people say that we should report these people to race organisers.....so how are you / we gonna do that if we have get PROOF?

I say ONE last time....I am the witness. TRUST ME it happened.......

I dont care.....but I tell you one thing.

EVERYTIME I see someone litter I am gonna post their pic, with or without proof, because I feel passionate about it.

And maybe ONE person will stop doing it. Maybe their friends have seen this and they can come and defend themselfs.....maybe they have seen it and is too embarrassed to say anything.

At joberg2c this year, they had problems with litterbugs on stage 3 and 4. Wappo just calmly told the crowd that if they get reports from other riders about you littering you will be asked to leave and can't participate again. Worked like a charm.

Zero tolerance for these people is the only way I am afraid.

Until you get the identity wrong one day. Say this was the case here, I see one of my suppliers being wrongly accused of littering and I terminate his services on the grounds that he litters. He then takes you to court for defamation of character and sue you for the R2.5million contract that I have terminated.

all you have to do is prove loss of income and you are then able to sue for the amount lost. Our case law is full of examples of this happening.

another expample: I see a pic of one of my employees with our company kit on being accused of littering. I dismiss the guy and it turns out that the culprit was actually one of my clients who rode with the company kit on (mistaken identity). My employee sue me and I sue the OP for damages.

People should be careful to implicate others on public forums without substantiating the claims properly.

Or perhaps organisers can get some sore dustbins on route. Say every 5km with slogans like "please help to keep trails tidy"

Usually there are more than one dustbin at the water points but seems everyone eats their energy bar in the 3-5km after the water point.

Perhaps organisers should incorporate a cleaning fee in all entries. Sure its not cool to pay for something that is not our fault but most of us already do. We pay for security companies to monitor our belongings because our police service is incapable etc. In that way organisers can create jobs by getting people to do a sweep of the route after a race and pick up any litter left behind. But if they do this they should stipulate that its for cleaning so that people can see why their entry fee goes up.

Sadly this will cause people to abuse the service and you will see people throwing litter all over the place.

***, put the litter in your pocket, or under your shorts. There's no excuse for littering. FULL STOP.

I know that as a landowner, I'd not allow cyclists over my land because of their disgusting behavior. AND it's not the top riders that litter, generally, but the wannabees.

One piece of plastic can block up the intestines of a cow, causing death. That's a lot of money down the tubes because of a pig.

edit Hennie, if it's windy, that litter will be spread over the farm, what then?

Unfortunately the pro,s are also to blame .They are normally the riders losing their bottles or gu wrappers and d on,t stop to pick it up .Have you ever seen a top rider stop and dismount to pick up their waterbottle ?

If you can get a guy fired for dropping a paper in a bike race, then I want you to be my HR man .

Yea the culprits in question at j2c were at the sharp end, they used newspaper inside their clothes on the cold starts and then just moered them away along the route....they were towards the sharp end

Sure. I know exactly what you are talking about. None of these ideas are ideal, but what happens when I put an empty gu packet back in my pocket and the next time I reach to take something out it sticks to my glove and falls out without me knowing it? Sure if someone informs me I will gladly pick it up again because I hate it when people litter (on the trail and urban)

But don't you think it will help having more dustbins on route? Then I can throw away my litter at the first available point. I say also slogan the dustbins to create awareness. Something like "If you want to enjoy this trail again, help us keep it clean"

If you don't allow cyclist on your ground and all land owners start to do the same, where will we be able to ride? What do you suggest we do to people that litter? I gave a suggestion to solve the problem, your turn.

I personally only eat at a water point. When I'm done I throw my paper in the dustbin provided. If there is none then I put it back in my pocket.
