Would people in South Africa be interested in an easy to use ratings and review website for mountain bike trails all over South Africa? Top trails by region, best single tracks, family trails, downhill trails, commenting etc. ?

Hell yes. Although that would be a monumental undertaking... Especially with all the complaints of people who are smoothing out trails... Imagine a published poll and getting gnarly trails downgraded thanks to the mommies?

Great idea, and especially for someone like me, who rides the same trails and doesn't really know others or is worried about where you are actually allowed to ride.

As above, what an enormous task though. IIRC, there are maps of some of the popular trails by iRideAfrica, just do a quick search I think it'll come up.

bikelife.co.za is great but they have very few trails compared to mtbroutes.co.za. mtbroutes do a lot of trails nicely but no review system or top trails rating system. any other feedback?

Very useful if you want to check out where to ride in an unknown area. Not strictly a "rating" site, but still a good indication of what to expect.

There are just so many routes, I think it might be near impossible to properly rate them all, like guest houses / hotels. Having readers rate it online? I think that will cause more of a mess than anything.

i think the impossibility comes into rating them objectively. to do that you would need to entirely do it based upon fact..i.e km of singletrack vs jeep vs district, classes of gradient/ascent, class of gradient/descent...and the the big question is how you classify the technicality of the trail objectively as one person's technical is anothers walk in the park

Rating is a very subjective thing. Rather grade the based on the international standard that is used by most bike parks nowadays. (Black, Green, Blue etc.)

Alternatively just let prospective riders what is there. (Rocks, roots, ruts, rivers etc)

Keep it as objective as possible.

As an observation though I prefer the Bikelife site to the MTB Routes.

+1 definitely! maybe with a how much the trails entrance fee is and what facilities are available at trail centers?

So riders know what to expect or if they can bring their families along
