Die Burger Road Race

I'm surprised there weren't more that came off their bikes on the section. Flying downhill at speed only to be hit by a brick wall of side wind is a recipe for disaster.

i felt sorry for all the guys on deep sections......saw some scary moments with a few of them

fortunately i train and race on mine.....so i have a good idea how the bike reacts and just when to brace/lean etc

some of the guys i saw were struggling......there was a guy with a spez venge with 80mm wheels on!!!! (going VERY slowly and carefully)

Ok im going to admit, after 85kms or so, my legs had given up... This being my 1st race since the Argus as i broke my leg the week after and have had NO winter training at all due to the pins in my leg... Anyway, i think a major reason is because the muscles were probably too warm, well, i mean HOT.. Reason being i made a MASSIVE error on Sat night. On sat after 8 when i got home, i decided it was finally time to shave my legs, 1st time since the day before Argus, and due to my broken leg, 1 being considerably thinner than the other, i couldnt stand to look at 1 thick strong leg and 1 shrimp tail!! So i started and shaved my 1 leg(took a while as its been 8 months of hair growth, 1st used hair machine and then razor) then thought, il take a 5min break and then start again on the other, well, i woke up on Sunday Morning(late) had to rush to get to Stellies on time(which i didn't) and only THEN i realised only 1 leg is shaved!! Fortunately for me i had my Long tights in the car so just slipped those on!! Started to feel my legs cooking after about 70kms...

Funniest thing I've read in a while!

Massive error on my behalf to only shave 1 leg then pass out, so the last 20 plus km's i was struggling.

I've accepted im very undertrained... Anyone who rides in groups weekend mornings who lives in the Southern Suburbs, please DM me..

you owe me a keyboard!!!!!

Has anyone DM'd you yet? :whistling:

Deep sections and wind are a no no.

Unless like you say you have trained with them - big up for taking on that wind with ds. You can spot the novice deep section riders a mile off. Sometimes it is best to leave certain things to the cooler more experienced guys ;-)

If you were in the leading A bunch on the R44, how did you manage to finish almost 9 minutes behind the leading A riders?

You're confused with someone else, Big JD.

I dunno you.

LOADS of guys only ride deep sections because they look "cool"... its the same thing on Argus day, it can be blowing gail force, some guys will only use their DS because it Looks cool... But its the same as the saying goes "you buy the kit and you never wana take it off)

The guy was actually giving warning - if you looked carefully there was a bike and a bloke lying in the grass, had deep sections so the wind must have taken him out. That was a very scary section.

Looked carefully?! haha, noooo chance! I heard a warning yell, saw the bike in front of me go hard right... went "huh?!" saw headlights on our side of the road, went hard right...missed it. (Nearly crapped myself.) There was hardly time to say "OH sh..." let alone look carefully.

We happened to be two groups converging at that time and I happened to be at the back of the group, but I did not make it by what can be deemed as comfortable margins. If there were more behind me, it would have become more and more interesting as it rippled on.

I was also in E batch, we had a good group going, managed to hold onto the bunch until R44, and then couldn't hold on any more. Battled the last 30km's in the wind on my own. Happy with a 3:12 for my first Burger, considering I did Caledon tri on Saturday and my training hasn't been what it should be for the last few months. Without a doubt my fastest, hardest ride of my life. But happy with the result. So many valuable lessons to take away from the Burger and from DC ride this year. Next year will be a good year :)

a bit off point, but how did you manage to get seeded in E for your first Burger? Very good Argus time? Or any other rides?

I got seeded E with no prior Burgers. i was also very average in the Argus.

What I did do, was the One tonner in horrible conditions, and that might have bumped me into E. Not sure what other races she might have done,

Just a shame I couldnt take advantage of being "E" :(

cadence - PPA seeding plays a role in getting you seeded for Burger AFAIK, so other funrides could seed you well for Burger.

BTW - off the negative stuff. How about the girl that won (tied) the short route female section?! Getting a bike for a birthday prezzie 5 days ago and then klapping the short route! Awesome... Berry, the other half of the tie was a name I think I recognized... or is it not who I think it is? (If so - congrats! )

Not done Argus.

Did Knysna(80km mtb and reduced road race) this year and DC last year? I am new to cycling so despite one very bad 94.7 two years ago, Die Burger is only my 5th official road race if you include the 2 dc rides.
