You train and prepare for an Event.

Entries are pre paid.

But for some reason you pull out at the last minute.

When do you draw the Line?

1. Medical

2. Mechanical

3. Wife/ Husband

4. Weather

1800 entries were received with costs ranging from r180 to r300 per entry,

But 500 people did not Show Up today!

What is your opinion?

A different spin on your answers - the PPA One Tonner is meant to be a FUN ride. Note the word FUN!!!!

1. So how many people are really fit enough to ride 160km and enjoy it? Probably less than half the entries!!

2. The wind is gale force today - which even for the people you are fit enough - would had made it far less FUN - if FUN at all.

Give me a race I would have entered ridden and possibly won - but the last part is a bit far fetched! So to the person who today crossed the finnish line 1st - Alex - Well done, but I don't think anyone really won today - more everyone had a bit of a aff k#k session! N doubt the ride will make them better off for the DC but probably will require 2 or 3 days rest!

How that for an opinion!

Todays weather was just ridiculous. Not pitching I can totally understand.

And who cares about the money. As mentioned, ALL of us ride for the fun of it(it's not like you win much, if anything, for even coming first) and if you force yourself to go because you paid R170/R300 and then sit in the saddle for 5+ hours cursing seems silly to me.

That being said, I did ride and had an awesome ride. It was moerse tough and had a lot of moaning involved. But at the end of the day I enjoyed it and feel good for the accomplishment! :D

I am not saying you must ride only if you are fit or ride to enjoy.

Every ride/ race is a training session and not everyone is going to be on form for the event.

I just found it strange to me the amount of people that decided not to ride.

Yes I had a tough day, but i did have good day out on the bike.

There have been quite a few "races" and rides which I've not pitched to because I didn't feel like:

1) Trashing a chain/cassette in mud

2) Being blown around

3) Freezing

4) Not having fun

I've ridden enough (and plan to still ride a LOT more) during my life to not put up with an unpleasant ride. The Rxxx entry fee forfeited is the least of my worries when the "will it be enjoyable?" question comes up.

This wind is pumping, I can fully understand people not wanting to ride 160 km's in it unless they are fit / strong

I think the OP's asking when is a prepaid entry fee worth walking away from. I would also have forfeited my R300 entry fee with today's wind. But will I forfeit my R4,200 W2W entry fee in a fortnight if it's windy? No ways. And some less fit and even sick riders may have done today's One Tonner and probably shouldn't have but just weren't willing to consider forfeiting 300 hard-earned Rands.

I thought something was weird when I saw only 1102 people finished the 1 Tonner. The large number of DNSs explains it all. I'm sure it was the wind that made 500 people suddenly get the flu very early this morning.

I cycle for fun...

Corollary - like calculus at school ...

If I wont perceive it as fun, then I wont ride it

last mtb race i started in the rain cost me R1500, so if it rains i dont race...

Bearings.....njom njom njom.

My only DNS was at last year's race at van gaalens...not the nissan one, another. It was pouring at the start. Myself, typhoon and swift01 took one look at the rain and went to the beer tent for a 7AM hair of the dog.
