Lane splitting on bicycle .... do you do it ?

Absolutely, if I need to get across lanes or go around obstacles like double parked cars etc. And if traffic is moving, indicate my movement/direction and not assume the driver/s assume where I'm going.

What grates me on a road like Jan Smuts, is riding on the left and having some twat on my wheel riding a scooter.

 

Additionally, if traffic is backed up there is no way a motorbike should be going faster than a bicycle between lanes, the speeds should correlate.

Always. I find it easier on the bike than the motorbike.

 

Also car drivers don't seem to want to kill you quite as often when on a bicycle; or is it the bike is a lot lighter and easier to manoeuvre than the moto...

If the cars are stationary at a traffic light, then yes, I split lanes and get to the front, move left between the 2 last cars, stop for the red traffic light, to the left and slightly in front of the front car where he can clearly see me, make a little track stand to impress everyone ;), wait for the light to turn green and race the cars to the other side of the intersection and beyond.....

 

If the cars are moving, even slowly, I do not split lanes, I take up a whole lane and keep moving at the same speed as the traffic, minding my following distance. I find that splitting lanes in slowly moving traffic often put you in blind spots where drivers don't expect to find you and they often then change lanes and run you over. :angry:

Traffic backed up for km's do you split ... ? of course being aware of motor bikes and giving way to them ...

Why should you have to give way to a motorbike. As for lane splitting I do it only when cars are stationary.

Cause by and large, we, the riders thereof, are hooligans and will be lane splitting a lot faster than you. Yes, I understand its reckless and dangerous, but that's just how we roll.

the thing i am most afraid of when lane splitting both in motorcycle and bicycle, are passengers opening doors to get out of a car. normally close to traffic lights, but anywhere really.

 

it is very important to indicate to motorists using hand signals. i find that 90% of motorists have no problem giving a gap when one indicates timeously and properly.

 

The above refers mainly to changing lanes to turn right at a traffic light on dual lane roads.

I find people in cars are way more courteous to bicycles lane splitting than motorbikes, giving way no problem. what amazes me is that on the motorbike taxis will move over no problem for you but your high rollers in fancy cars make a point of cutting you off because if they stuck in traffic you must wait as well.
