With the Silverback around 13K and the Titans around 10K this fatbike from Rapid looks like a much cheaper alternative to 'test out the water',the weight of the bike might however make it a unpleasent experience and put you of fatbikes for ever.

The test the water story doesn't fly with me - you wouldn't go and buy a Makro bike to 'test the waters' of MTBing would you?

All you'll achieve here is hating the bike and from there 'hating' fatbikes. Not really a fair first impression on a 20kg plus bike with crappy components.

I'm all for cheap-to-try-out alternative, but stick to a Silverback or Titan where at least the components are respectable and you have the ability to upgrade should you want to keep the bike...

Penny wise, pound foolish would sum up the exercise for me.

Rather spend a bit more and get a bike that you will more likely enjoy - or hate, but then thats because you genuinely established that you don't like a fatbike.

I did actually do the GAME mountain bike thing, rode twice and was put off of cycling for about a year before I decided to try again, with a propper entry level bike.

As for the Rapid, saw the bike and saw the price on Twitter and thought it might be a viable alternative, but like you also mentioned,I wouldnt want to buy the Rapid and have a bad experience and relate that to fatbikes in general.

Will then rather save up some more and try the Titan or Silverback.

Cannot believe people are actually considering these...

...besides the fishermen...

At a price of R4250 it's going to tempt a lot of people. But with that weight and components they will probably have buyers regret and be put of fat bikes. So it goes with budget bikes.

Edit: Didn't see your reply to Benreaper, but I think we are in agreement :)

Do you think Chris Akrigg was also on his way to go fishing?

Lets be honest, Chris can make anything look cool to ride. Even a roadbike

I got my hands on one for a very very good price to do just that... test the waters.... changed some of the components (ok most components :P)straight out the box and to be honest i WANT a proper fatty NOW even MORE than ever. The heaviest parts on this bike is the tyres and tubes. Tyres are about 2.7kgs each and the tubes almost 800gr each. Change the tyres to something much lighter and go tubeless and it wont be half bad for a starter fatty at a very budget price. Once i get my proper fatty ill hand this one down to someone wanting to try the fatty world.....

Meet Sir Rommel hahaha

Thanks for the feedback. Interestingly enough, most fat bikes hold a lot of their 'additional' weight in the wheels and tyres. Even the On Ones OEM tubes were 600g each. Changed them for light weight Schwalbes and lost nearly 1kg. I'd be reluctant to run ultra thin wall tyres on these bikes though - I think they'd roll way to much.

Difference is, you have done some research and have the knowledge to know that the shortcomings aren't necessarily related to all fatbikes in general and may be particular to this buy.

I can't see even budget components adding up the quoted additional weight - what is the frame made from? Steel or alu? Can only figure its a moerse heavy frame...?

If you have access to hole cutter and a steady hand, many guys drill out their own rims - I believe this can drop 100 - 200g per rim... Could be an interesting project.

I do like the grey with the purple/ blue bits  .

Edit: That cassette looks smallish. Running a 34 chainring? Must be tough turning those heavy wheels?

Nah frame is steel boet but suprisingly not that heavy. The rims themselves is alu although the site says steel. Hubs is *** steel ones with screw on cluster so wasnt able to fit bigger than 8speed. Changed the gripshift to trigger which is much nicer. Added a better square taper crank with a 32 wolf tooth. Bars and stem was also changed and fitted some Deore hydraulic brakes insteaf of the crappy cable ones that came with the bike.

I think the tyres and tubes on this one is the biggest weight at almost 7kgs for the 2 tyres and tubes.

I dont think ill modify any further though. Think its an ok run around for now till i get my proper fatty. [emoji106]

Its actually suprisingly easy to get it up to speed. hahaha its a blast really.

Once they're up to speed they're awesome! Hard to stop  . Sensible upgrades.

What is the front and rear hub spacing on these?

Front is 135mm. Used a normal mtb rear axle to convert it to quick release....

Rear is 190mm
