Sjoe,

I have not read this much in a long time!

I now finally have some space for a veggie garden and the build process/soil prep will start shortly.

While I'm waiting I'm going to start growing some potted herbs and chillies for consumption and to make some pesticide as the plan is for the garden to be 100% organic.

I want to plant the following as part of the herb garden;

Basil

Thyme

Chamomile

Coriander

Flat Leaf parsley

Oregano

Rocket

Spring Onion

Rosemary

Chilli

Want to add garlic to the mix, but I see everyone says that the best planting time is only in Jan-Apr.

I also have a problem with cats, any tips of plants that will deter them as my dogs won't be able to chase them once the veggie patch is closed off

What organic pesticide are you going to be making?

Better start your rosemary early as they take ages to grow.

I have all kinds of veggies/herbs, but nothing keeps the cat away. You could plant catnip at another corner of the garden or somewhere far away.

thanks.

I have an existing rosemary bush which I can hopefully transplant

Howzit guys. With the holidays coming up I'm trying to think of ways to water my potted plants while we are away, there are no friends around so I have nobody to go do it. I have seen a method where you make a hole in the cap of a bottle, fill it and turn it upside down in the pot. Has anyone tried this? Any other ideas?

poke a tiny hole in the side of the bottle with a pin, as small as you can. It will drip drip slowly. I did the same thing to a mole hole dropping drips of Jeys Fuid mixed with water to chase them away.

Test a few times to get hole size etc correct

Other option buy those gel balls that expand when watered. they will keep the moisture in the soil

Just check on other plants that the soap does not burn them. I'm using a neem oil based thing that I dilute a lot. Seems to be working.

What is this oil based thing and what does it do prevent etc?

Its a Biogrow product called Bioneem.

BIONEEM : 1500ppm AZADIRACHTIN

The key insecticidal ingredient found in the neem tree is AZADIRACHTIN, a naturally occurring substance that belongs to an organic molecule class called tetranortriterpenoids. It is structurally similar to insect hormones called ‘ecdysones’ which control the process of metamorphosis as the insects pass from larva to pupa to adult. Metamorphosis requires the careful synchrony of many hormones and other physiological changes to be successful, and azadirachtin is an ‘ecdysone blocker’. It blocks the insects production and release of these vital hormones. Insects then will not moult, thus breaking their life cycle.

Azadirachtin also serves as a feeding deterrent for some insects. Depending on the stage of life-cycle, insect death may not occur for several days. However, upon ingestion of minute quantities, insects become quiescent and stop feeding. Residual insecticidal activity is evident for up to seven days or longer, depending on insects and application rate.

Bioneem is used to control a wide range of insects (up to 200 insect types) including white flies, leafminers, mealybugs, thrips, fruit flies, leaf hopper, red spider mite, weevils and many more. Azadirachtin is relatively harmless to insects that pollinate crops and trees, such as butterflies, spiders and bees; ladybugs that consume aphids; and wasps that act as a parasite on various crop pests. This is because neem products must be ingested to be effective. Thus, insects that feed on plant tissue succumb, while those that feed on nectar or other insects rarely contact significant concentrations of neem products.

Acute toxicity study of Bioneem to the Earthworm LC50 > 3000 mg / kg.

Acute oral toxicity study of Bioneem to mice LD50 – 5650 mg / kg.

Neem products are recognized in organic guidelines by IFOAM. Bioneem has been found to be compatible with most commonly used fungicides, insecticides and fertilizers. Physical compatibility should first be checked out. (Read label). Do not apply in temperatures above 30 degrees C. Bioneem is an emulsifiable concentrate. Dosage rates vary between 300 ml – 500 ml per 100 L water, depending on the growth stage of plant and insect pressure. Packaging : 500 ml, 5 L, 10 L, 25 L containers.

Ok, think I have somthing similar but will look into it thanks

No problem. The stuff is pricey but it works. I just over dilute it because I'm scared the oil smothers the plant.
