As much as this sucks that his bike got stolen here in SA & this is no justification, I'm just just saying, this could've happen anywhere in the world but more so in the UK where Charlie is from, in fact more bikes get stolen there than in Africa.

The crime levels in the new South Africa are mind blowing. Usually, 'the less privileged' will steal anything which can be moved! Indeed, crime can happen anywhere but really, let's not fool each other :D

who is Charlie? was there a point to riding across africa? was it to raise awareness or did he go out on a sunday ride and kept peddling till he hit CPT?

Would love to hear the full story be behind the 55000km... is he cycling to the starting line at the epic?

Hang on there, how old is your bike?

I actually have a small Giant Anthem hanging around my place that Charlie can use to get around Cape Town, but looking at his bike, he probably needs a medium or a large. As for riding it around the world, it might not be the best option.

Does not matter if more bikes get stolen in America the UK or anywhere else it remains totally unacceptable that this happen daily in South Africa and what's even worse our useless police (and government that controls them) does absolutely nothing about it.

correction, cycling round the world. Been to 50 odd countries so far. Had his bike (or horse) the line to 567 was not clear, taken in a forest in Mongolia. His trip through Africa was ok, till he hit cape town.

It wasn't stolen it was abducted our Alien migrant workers in Cape Town have a good thing going with bike theft.

When you report it stolen the police officer asks you if you are insured and when you answer affirmatively...you can see the paperwork is a formality .

How to get in contact with this guy? I'm serious, I'll even lend him my old Trance (large) while he's in Cape Town, my son (strictly, it is now his bike) says it's OK, all he wants is a picture of Charlie on the Trance.

This is sad news.

Unfortunately theft is perceived as an officially condoned and acceptable activity in South Africa.

Even Jan van Riebeek complained in his diaries about theft.

Unfortunately very little can be done about it.

If you dig a little deeper, you'll discover that old Jan was sent to "The Cape" because of his own light-fingerdnes. (And no, I don't have the time to find the source right now)

Bummer about the bike being stolen.

Van Riebeeck joined the Dutch East India Company and sailed to Batavia in April 1639 as an assistant surgeon, having learned the craft from his surgeon father. From there he went to Japan, and in 1645, Van Riebeeck was given charge of the company trading station at Tongking (Tonkin, now in Vietnam). Van Riebeeck was recalled from the post in Tongking by the Dutch authorities when it was discovered that he was conducting trade for his own account.

Hi

Iv read some of his journals and it's amazing the many places and experiences he encountered. It's really is sad to accept that a man can travel thru rural Africa in some of the most volatile dangerous war torn countries on earth yet his goods are safer than downtown Cape Town.

I'm sure there will be many offers to replace his bike and as a fellowKaapie would like to assist too but it's the principle and the biggest concern of whether he will feel as comfy on anew bike...remember this bike has been ridden +50 000km, first prize would be to get the fockers who stole the bike
