Hey guys. So my question is does anyone take their bikes on the Gautrain? And if so in how and what is the procedure? I've heard that the bike needs to be in a bag, does this bag need to something specific or will a DIY bag work? Spending R1000-R2500 on a bike bag just doesn't make sense to me as it would take around 2 years if commuting per train for me to actually start saving on travel costs instead of taking the car.

My idea was to get a piece of fabric, big enough to cover the bike all round, and just close it up at the top with velcro. Any thoughts on this idea?

Yes, no its not going to happen unless its in a bike bag, how exactly that is defined, I cant say, but there was someone here who said they had also made their own bag / cover thingy and it seemed to work.

The Security guys are zealots, try taking a take away coffee on the train, or even into the station, and you will get my drift.

I would much rather have zealous security guards than have to worry about some coffe/cooldrink/witchdoctor mix on my seat/shirt/pants.

Or some-ones left-over walkie-talkies/smilie/boereworsrol crumbs stuck to my pants/shirt

Edit> Brain and fingers not yet in sync.

I agree with the food policy. But I don't get the anti-bike thing. How is roadbike tyres more dirty than the average person's shoes? I would understand if they ban dirty/muddy bikes.

Yeah. They do a fantastic job in spite of all the pricks who think they know better and don't have to abide by the rules.

And thanks to the guards, the trains and stations still look in new condition.

I think the new carriages will be more bike friendly. Not sure when they are due to arrive though. (Less seats and more standing room)

Sorry if this is a bit of a hijack, but does anyone travel from Rhodesfield to Marlboro in the mornings and back in the afternoons, and what times do you generally travel? Would be interested to know how busy the Gautrain is, as the biking option is starting to look better and better, given e-tolls and fuel prices.

Dont get me wrong. I am all for bike-on-a-train.

I am also for pro-active maintanance.

Yes, that's me.

Some of their rules suck, and so does their security staff's attitude towards their customers.

Myciti allows bikes onboard. The busses in Vancouver have bike racks mounted to the front of the bus. I must admit that I have spotted many bicycles on busses overseas, but not any on trains.
