Interesting topic this! I see some hubbers are riding monster hills!

I have this one hill on my regular training ride:

  • 1.9km
  •
  • Avg Grade10%
  •
  • Lowest Elev500m
  •
  • Highest Elev701m
  •
  • Elev Difference201m
  •
  • Climb Category3
  •

Not the longest or steepest hill out there, but what makes it really difficult is the surface of loose, rocky shale. With a few very rocky sections that I just am not able to get up and over yet. yesterday I rode it again and as soon as I started I just could not get any traction, my tyre pressure was too high. So I deflated it a bit (too much actually, and didn't have my pump or bombs with me), which helped to a point. In December my rear wheel spun out, I couldn't unclip fast enough and took a tumble, spraining both my wrists quite badly. Had to ride back home like that because it is a rough 4x4 track and there was no signal anyways.

In total this route is 18km with 630m of climbing. All over very rough terrain, which makes it much tougher than climbing 600m on a tar road for example.

Molteno Rd ,Oranjezicht goes up towards Cable car - still to try.

Tried Bellevue st but to much traffic and had to jump off.

Bellevue is by far the steepest I've ridden, front wheel dancing around as you get closer to the top and just for extra torture continue straight up the cul de sac and up the grass bank onto Kloof and suffer some more continuing non stop all the way to Signal Hill!

I found this "road" just outside Robertson. Access is from the Pat Busch nature reserve. Their visitors guide suggested that you walk the trail first and that it should only be attempted by very experienced mountain bikers. I thought that this was a load of rubbish and rode it by myself... The climb was insane and I thought I was going to die on the descent!

I'm bored, sick, and injured so I thought I'd try revive an old thread

I rode this little grade earlier this year: https://www.strava.com/segments/14962904

Its not long but with a lot of it being in the +20% gradient its an energy sapper. It had me standing, in 52x28t, at a cadence of about 50. You think it will relent around the bend but nope, it just keeps going.

I need inspiration for things to attack when I can finally get back on a bike again!

Top 2 names are both joburg guys............. 2nd is a hubber.

Haven't seen this thread before.
I rode this segment again last weekend.  I never enjoy it, but it has to be done.  It's unrelenting and gets steeper the higher you go - my computer showed 34% at one point near the top!  It's too steep to ride straight up (front wheel just lifts) so S's are needed.

Don't do it if you suffer from vertigo...

What gearing did you use? The 42x36 on the gravel bike hurt.
