Nice article, use it or don't ;)

<snip>

link to WHO....

Hmm, going by the article alone (I have not read the study) this seems like correlation with low fat intake, not causation. Note that three things changed: less smoking, more veggies and lower fat. We know for sure that smoking causes heart disease, so it could be that on its own. We know more veggies make you healthier so maybe that helped. It's the low fat advice which is being questioned these days (with reason I think and know from personal experience) so it could well be that these Finns had lower heart disease *in spite of* their lower fat consumption given that they smoked less and ate more veggies.

If a human was supposed to eat only plant material you would have had a different digestive system and no canine teeth .Very simple really !

Hey Nick

apologies if i was slightly cryptic.

What i meant was ''she now craps everyday''.

Ask a few of your guy and girl friends about their bowel movements and see which gender generally craps EVERYDAY !

the answer wont be the girls !

Pooh 101 dismissed..

this is not entirely true. My missus craps on me everyday...

"Try riding 200km in one day with a fully loaded touring MTB bike in the heat of Tanzania and then eating a single bread roll for dinner. Get up the next day and on a light breakfast of biscuits do another 140km. I did that. It was not so easy as it sounds."

This is a no meat meal, but I'm not sure that being vegetarian was necessarily the problem, you were just unable to get enough nutrition out of that meal. I do think that there is merit in the fact that we have digestive systems for meat, but I question if we were ever meant to have it in the quantities that most are accustomed to.

Scott Jurek's book is a fantastic read. As a vegetarian I have got a lot of inspiration from him as an athlete and I love his recipes.

I also feel that the people who monitor, balance and are more aware of what they eat, are generally healthier than average, with or without meat.

Nice article, use it or don't ;)

finns are a weird bunch. an uncanny high percentage of them are lactose intolerant. go to a supermarket in helsinki and almost every dairy product is lactose free. the article also totally ignores the high alcoholism among finns. just sayin'... perhaps beer is the answer

I guess the same logic applies to our Tonsils? Yet doctors remove it as if it has no function whatsoever.

And i'm sure you mean by the way we have evolved, and that is based on how our ancestors used to live. I don't think they had much choice in what they ate, nowadays there is so much supply all year round one can eat how ever one wants.

I am not here to consult vegetarianism, but as I said earlier I don't think eating meat 3 times a day everyday can be good at all. Someone asked why - because too much of anything is bad. And meat is not very nutritious and as I said in my first post the problem is people base their meals on meat, they don't think of a nice meal and add some meat - they think of a meat and add some extras(chips...). If you didn't eat meat, you would be forced(hopefully) to get some variety, try some veggies and have a wide range of veggies which is ultimately really healthy and the best diet. Of course you can be bad about it and just eat bread, chips ETC but that is just silly.

Also, I know of multiple elite athletes that are vegetarian, if not vegan. It's not hard, just gotta watch out for a lack of protein(we all know this isn't hard to take in with supplements) and your Iron levels.

Interesting read.

It's total BS trying to cycle 200km on a bread roll!

You have to take in the same as what you expend or you'll wither and die.

As far as proteins go, veges should eat nuts, beans, lentils etc and they'll be fine.

I do my bit to keep the sheep and cattle population in check, as I love gebraaide boud and steaks!

Heart attacks are preventable and putting your fork in a plant (instead of an animal) remains your best health decision. Imagine a world where six out of seven heart attack obituaries disappear, six out of seven funeral home tables are empty, six out of seven hospital CCU beds for heart attacks are empty. Imagine all the people whose lives we could save ..

Please Dear God no...its way to crowded already...
