Quite a silly argument imo.

The only thing i would say is that where skill and tools are used in a sport; it takes less physical toughness to be at the top than where those are not part of the sport.

But so what?

Just like every top 10 list, it's going to get disputed.

Rowing is muuuuch harder than soccer. You don't need a cristiano ronaldo dive to prove it either. You have to be proper tough to row at the highest level, they say preparing for an oxford/cambridge campaign will take 9months off your life due to the prolonged stress you put your system under.

Yeah those rowers look completely cooked when they finish, they don't keep anything back.

As far as the list goes I think MMA is a fair call (I would add Judo, in fact anything that involves a mix of standing and grappling in there too).

True I guess.. There are far too many different criteria to define "tough".

Except for Curling... I think we can all agree that curlers are not tough?

I also played Ice Hockey for the last 19 years and that's just as hard. take a look at the link below and tell me differently

One or two cyclists are more than happy to go the biff as well. It's a contact sport!

At school and varsity I played hockey at provincial level. We always joked - "If blood scares you, go play rugby"

Man, those were the days. I was beyond top fit. Played 7 days a week - trained 3 hours per day for 5 days, matches days 6 and 7.

Similar traiining effort and matches when I played baseball and softball. This training regime was part of my life for over 20 years. So now even training for stage races is a third of that time and effort.

Army basics in the 70's was an absolute breeze for me. It was like a holiday camp.

Three minutes on the ground and a mix of standup and most people will pass out.

Boxers are also immensely fit.

And let's not forget the cross country skiers!!

They blew me away at the Olympics.

The guys that make it there do so coming from countries where people learn to walk with skies as soon as they can crawl.

The level of competition is immense and some of those medalists have medalled in 3 or 4 Olympic Games.

please u cant compare rowing and football!!!! to make it at the top level as a footballer you need talent that's not something you can improve in a gym....

I happen to know one of SA Olympic rowers, Even if he had to dedicate 8 hours a day to football he would have zero chance on the football field.

keep dreaming buddy

5 minute Judo fight is like a damned eternity!

Tough has to fit into 2 brackets, endurance and explosive.

A fight (Karate, judo, MMA) is 5 minutes explosive

A long distance runner is 5 to 8 hours endurance

Riding is anything from 2 to 6 hours of endurance plus explosive exertion.

All very tough, no one is ever going to be the Winner here!

I know right....it was like my favourite thing to watch...especially when they pull in to shoot...

I think this is the fundamental problem with South African endurance sport, for some reason we have to always go tougher, I.e. further, harder, etc. and this is reflected in our races. Are we trying to compensate for something?

I cycle because I love the freedom, the awesome views and the energy it ads to my day.

Sure - and just to prolong the debate, I liked the Australian who was asked about the huge medal haul of the GB team at the Sydney Olympics. He said:

"yeah, they're great at all the sit-down sports" - meaning, in our case, cycling, rowing and shooting.

In all fairness to the tennis players. . One can't say that it is not strenuous or mentally challenging. I have watched some matches where they play for 6hrs and at that intensity to still have to apply a game plan and make sure the balls land where you want them to.

I have watched my own son play 2hr long matches at the age of 10.. to see him go through ups and downs and still have to focus is a different challenge all together.
