Anyone getting the flu/cold like symptoms after hammering yourself to the max? Happens to me way too often. What to do to prevent it?

My cardiologist put me on a combo of zinc/selenium, ester-c and other vits last year and I haven't been sick since.

I have read up about vits extensively and it appears that zinc/selenium combo is the new wonder cold fighter.

there is a product at dischem (in a tin...name escapes me) that contains ester-c, spirulina and other stuff, which should help.

of course, there's always moducare and the other immune boosters.

Read an article where they said jumping in the sauna directly after a hard session reduces your chances of viral contraction due to the reduced immunity by 60% (will see if I can find it)

Otherwise, pop some high GI carbs directly after your workout (helps with muscle hypertrophy in any case), and take a multi-vit throughout the day.

Haha, "avoid people" ... I remember the last few weeks going into Epic I refused to shake hands with anyone. Got to do what you got to do!

hahahaha classic

I pop 1000mg of Vitamin C, which i down straight after the ride with a recovery drink. This is when your immune system is most vulnerable.

Works for me - don't remember when last I was sick.

PS: I also wash my hands thoroughly and often like I have OCD - with Dischem branded triclosan soap

I like to wade in on this one...I popped multi-vites of every description, booster injections in March and again in August pre-season change...still get flu in end March and beginning September like clockwork.

I stopped the multi-vites last year, only thing that improved was my heartburn, still got the flu in April. We have young children, so my current theory is that they bring some awesome bugs from school which likes to attack their dad?

Daily application or other?

Daily - morning and night - if you train, then do it about 30 min after you train.

Warning - the stuff tastes horrible.

And get a flu shot - every year - kids too - I usually do the whole family in March every year. The vaccine becomes more effective every year for the first 5 years or so, as you are exposed to more viral strains in the vaccine (they change every year a bit)

I am also a BIG believer in hand and face washing - kids too... and keep you hands off your face (trying to get kids to do this is hard - especially fingers out the nose and mouth... but one has to try...)
