I think its a brilliant idea. If you don't have the cash don't bash. 1000kms in 3 days is way beyond what I can ever achieve on a bike and I guarantee beyond 99 % of the riders on this forum. Look how many people fork out R50k to ride the epic with no chance of winning anything so I don't see the entry fee as a problem. If you are that sure of your abilities then the entrance fee doesn't even play a part. My hats off to Alex and his investor for putting up the prize money it can only be good for the sport. I for one will be glued to my TV when this event takes place and for the guys who enter all I can say is that your nuts are a lot larger than mine, just to finish is a major achievement. To all the trolls on this forum bashing the event dream big, if you are that good on a bike you will find a sponsor, I suspect the type of people that this event attracts are not the type that you find mouthing off on forums, but the quiet ones who pitch up and give it all on the bike in what i suspect is going to be one hell of a hard event. Peace.

okm so there's security on it. Like it's not coming from the entry fees?!

Don't think the CEO of Porsche SA had trouble finding US$1mil for prize money, but I'm sure they are doing this for business and would like to make a profit from the entries. Basic business - put down the cash and market and sell (and hope) you get a bigger return.

Is Porsche the sponsor?

If they are why no logos on the Munga website?

i am pretty sure that martin and jeannie's time last year was still faster than Alex's record time

nope...more than a day slower and the conditions were much better. but marty def won the fistfight the year before - it was epic to follow.

I reckon you will get some barely heard of adventure racing machines from all over the world coming to give it a bash... Those extreme adventure racers, like Martin was, will do the lack of sleep and distance with their eyes closed.. Or should I say eyes open

the top AR guys will be tired from AR worlds two weeks earlier in ecuador...i'm not convinced that they would win anyway....the massive prize money will draw the athletes who don't do AR

+1
This thing will take off. Tim James could be a contender -is he up and running again?

he's riding Freedom this year..starts next week - but I think this is a bit short for him, AND the exploits of mart/alex have blown his previous FC times down the list. major respect to the pilot for showing them the way to these times!

I have to wonder. What is the aim of the organisers with such a big winning purse ? Who do they plan on getting there ? Are they trying to put SA mountain biking on the map ?(it already is) And I disagree that a top adventure racing team will win. As much as I admire them and respect what they do and are capable of. The winning team will comprise of cyclists that sit just outside that top 5-10 % of any given field, but they can ride that pace the entire day, they will also be the best when it comes to nutrition and hydration, one of the riders is mechanically very sound and they can perform well under sleep deprivation. They would also have to be mature enough to get along regardless of what gets thrown at them. I reckon a RAAM winner is the type of individual we will be looking at to take the winning ticket.

I agree. look at RAAM as a template - 4800km in 7/8 days. the guys go for about 23hours a day with a quick kip in the backup van at stops. I don't think this is going to be on anything but 95% district road, so it's more for top roadies than epic podium finishers.

the organisers are actually engaging Lance. sorry guys, he's banned.

It would be interesting to see how they intend to cover it on TV.

It would be dull to have only "highlights" on DSTV at night .

It being continuous racing, to much can happen . . . . . like a team go and sleeps a bit and several others sneak past . . .

Has there been any indication that this event will actually be broadcasted or do we all just assume that it will

How they going to manage the logistics for broadcasting if the route will only be made available the day before they start.

They could make some bucks selling broadcasting rights

Perhaps have live tracking like the Epic, with a system/app or something that send out a update/email when teams go through checkpoints, stop for a certain amount of time, or if a team is passed by another one.

I'm sure there will also be good updates through social media as it was with the Epic.

Don't think they are. But the one guy is the CEO (on the website under "Who's behind it")

Edit: Porsche DESIGN SA. Not Porsche...
