Yeah that's something I learnt the hard way now, will be outfitting the house with fire extinguishers pretty soon.

I am always nervous with fuel smells and spills. I have installed one of those turbine roof extractor fans to try and help in the garage. 
I would like a push button operated Halon system!

Thanks. Fortunately this wasn't an enclosed space and I could move stuff out of harms way quickly enough. 

Like you mentioned with a collection like yours I'd take extra safety precautions.

Started the bike up on Saturday 12th with the buyer present and had it Idle till warm enough to ride. First the buyer went for a ride and returned saying the bike ran like a dream now, I took it out next and bike pulled like a rocket again with the clean carbs, but as I neared my house started stuttering again.

We checked and saw that one cylinder was cooler than the others so took out the spark plug and saw that it was fowled. The buyers said he'd get 4 new plugs at Autozone on Sunday morning after his round of golf and he'll come to collect the bike.

Come Sunday morning I notice some petrol undreneath the bike and realized that the carbs were getting stuck and flooding the piston chamber. Swung the motor and petrol came squirting out the sparkplug hole. On second swing of the starter realized some of the other piston chambers were also flooded so took out all the plugs to swing the motor and get rid of the petrol inside. Once again petrol squinting out everywhere.

Snapped a quick pic on the way back from dropping my eldest off at school .......... the urge to just keep riding was strong!

Edit: Sissy bar + bungie cord = awesome tool to strap a helmet and motorbike jacket to.

@BenReaper Sorry to see your bike go up in flames, thankfully no one was injured and the damage was limited to the bike.

 

As I've been training for the Freedom Circuit, I haven't had much opportunity to ride the Thruxton over the weekends but I had every intention of taking it our for a ride yesterday. Until I woke up with overcast conditions threatening rain. I suppose now the first proper opportunity will now be in May.

I know what I am going to do already, but just running it past here.

The HD has a satin alum trim on the right hand side and a chrome trim (Just below the seat) on the left hand side compliments of the previous owner who did stupid things.

I have already taped it up with black tape to get a feel for it, and it somehow highlights the engine and pipes more, but I am going to spray these trims black. Use rustoleum rattle can satin black on 2 x domes pendants over my dining room table and managed to get those out without any blemishes and to a really good finish ..... so intend doing the same to the HD and to any black bolts that have blemishes on their heads.

Excuse me gentlemen (and fellow motor sports junkies), for inserting myself into this thread. I do so because it seems to be one fairly well perused by Le Hub community. But where, may I ask, is the “Time to get the hell out of here” fred?

It was time, so it got the hell outta here...

But yeah, I think it was closed by Admin as it it became somewhat inflammatory (not dissimilar to the C%#@D-19 threads).

Admin has warned that non-cycling related threads need to stay on topic. Both the above-mentioned threads went from informative/helpful intentions to divisive and political ranting.

Hence why we avoid mentioning the C-word on this here motorcycle thread 🤫

So my DR750 restoration is ongoing. Its a cheapish job so no sand blasting of frames and such like, but lots of wire brush in cordless drill action is happening. The aim is to get the bike back to largely original colours with improvements to make it look better.

I'm moving from the back to the front and have resprayed the rear of the mainframe with white smooth Hammerite (white is the original frame colour.) Other parts of the frame that are hidden and need some decent protection from the elements are getting normal gray Hammerite brushed on. I'm impressed with the paint and the finish looks quite professional compared to past efforts of mine. 

Next step will be removing the rear shock and cleaning and painting that and the spring. I'm thinking Ohlins yellow for the spring and silver/gray for the swingarm and shock body. 

Some of the body panels were so badly painted that hot water softens the outer layer and it virtually rubs off. In other areas a better job was done making the stripping far harder. The tank is going to need a professional spray job and minor dent repair. 

Mechanically, I have the carbs to sort out and have just received rebuild kits for them from Mototech (thanks for the referral). The forks will need new seals as the left/brake side is leaking. I also had rear brake master cylinder mounting bolt break off in the cylinder which will need some careful drilling to remove and probably an easy out tool. Steel into aluminium with no anti seize doesn't work so well. 

I'm going to leave the wheels and probably the brakes until I've got the bike running and can test them properly. Rear brake does look as if it needs a service though - I suspect the pistons are a little sticky. 

Pic below is the look I'm aiming for - the frame, tank, side covers and fork boots that is.

@Headshot may I suggest you give Ameer a shout out. He is located next to Downtown off Esso Street in Montague gardens RE the spraying of that tank.

He does some really great work
