Is motorcycling allowed?

I am more seeing it as a tool to be able to connect to google maps primarily.

Music would be a nice to have occasionally, or at least the radio as an option.

Becoming very popular, and helmets are now designed and built to accommodate such atrocities. Not for me but I am an old curmudgeon and will resist such things.

This past week I have been to see factories in some sketch areas and pulling over on the bike to play with my phone to check the route on Google Maps every now and again does not sit well with me.

Also in sketch areas, I do not mount the phone on the bars either.

So seeing this as the more clandestine solution.

I use a navigation device called the Beeline. It’s small, unobtrusive and works relatively well. It’s not a grandiose sat nav like Garmin or TomTom bike specific satnavs but the beeline works really well.

they make units for cycling and motorcycling. Not sure if it’s available in ZA. Not ultra cheap either but gets me where I need to go with minimum fuss. Works on top of google maps thus not a satellite navigation system which may have drawbacks in rural areas.

I took a look at this and the pricing was a bit steep once landed in SA (Without accounting for duties either), to the point where I would rather get the in-helmet system.

I wear earplugs because my engine is just so damned noisy so no intercome for me. There's a thread about it on Wilddogs where there are some good things said about Cardo and then a poster mentions (and quotes the blurb) about the new Sena. Both quite pricy.

The two Cardo options are what look to be a decent solution to me ... so far in my "research"

Chances of me riding in a group using coms = 0.0439%
Chances of me riding with another rider using coms = 2.5%

Ear plugs are a must.... its the high pitched whistle sounds that destroy your hearing. hence i now am relatively deaf. long rides with JEB helmets in the 80's completely tuned out certain frequencies for me these days. So folks, wear ear plugs and dont just buy the cheapy foam ones get proper stuffs.

But its not all bad news, my wife's voice is in those frequencies.

This is why bikers always want louder exhausts, they're all wearing ear plugs or are already deaf. :)

On a related note,

My manager's son has cochlear implants, in order for them to work he wears bone conducting hearing aids. Problem is, he cant get his helmet on with the hearing aids on, so he is effectively riding deaf.

i bought my wife a set of bone conducting headphones for when she goes running, they work damn well. I think for motorcycling applications they would work superbly well, if one could get them under the helmet. That way one could still hear the traffic etc.

I have a freecom 2 system. Got it for the same reasons. Navigation and taking calls while moving between sites. Sometimes certain things are time sensitive, and missing loads of calls could be problematic.

I had 2 issues.
1) the helmet I had was quite noisy, causing difficulty to hear some people.

2) the wires for the speaker plug deteriorated on both the original and the 2nd helmet mounting system I bought. This caused both to stop working.

have not ridden with it for more than a year, as the cost of a 3rd “second helmet kit” wil surpass what I spent on the original system.

for your purpose, I would rather look at a set of JBL endurance run headphones. Will obv not work with earplugs. (Used these as well with success for navigation. No calls and can gooi tunes.)

edit, we have not been crazy busy the last while, so missing calls not such an issue. I normally call back at my next stop.

Tried in ear headphones before, and the pressure of them on my ears was not exactly a nice sensation.
