So I might have accidentally bought this.....

 

I haven't seen it yet, but the guy tells me it's all complete and was running before he took it apart. Will collect it in about 3 weeks.

 

I really wanted a 175 because that's what I had when I was a kid, but I reckon a 125LC should be just as much fun....and I know Bosson make a nice pipe for the 125LC,and they respond well to a bit of cylinder work :-)

You lucky fish. Now that's a nice project.

With a bit of porting, fiber reeds, a decent flat slide carb, and that Bosson pipe, you can have a nice little screamer there.

Despite being great bikes the 125Lc apparently weren't as reliable/bulletproof as the 175 or is that baseless hearsay?

I can't comment on that tbh - I've never owned an LC. But from what I can see in the pics, the swingarm, shocks and frame look very similar to the air-cooled bike, and the bottom-end too, so I am pretty sure they will share some parts. So if the LC did give trouble it would have been the top-end - who knows!

The little 400 arrived home today, back after a pretty extensive rebuild, including but not limited to : respray, correct decals, engine rebuild with rebore, cam chain and everything to do with it replaced, new wiring harness, wheel rebuild, seat rebuild and cover, original airbox and filter installed, brake overhaul etc etc.

I'm not an expert on Honda engines, but I knew a guy who rebuilt a few and if I remember correctly he told me the older Honda's like yours, had the camshaft running directly in the head with no white metal bearings. He said that the biggest problem with that is the guys usually let the bikes idle on the side-stand, and in doing so, the engine isn't level, so the oil doesn't always get to the elevated side of the camshaft. if that happens, the camshaft runs dry in that area, and the head is basically scrap. Not sure if that's true, but it does make sense. You might want to investigate that?

Pretty much as you said. I only use the centre stand as a rule. The cam chain is the achilles heal of these old Honda engines. Mine has a modified cam chain adjuster built by the fellow who did the engine. The 400 is his speciality. He machined the tappet covers and made some difficult to find engine plugs.

The exhaust is actually a copy, sourced from David Silver in the UK. It is a good copy, bit not perfect for a show bike. Originals are no longer available. Not important to me as mine is to be ridden. To make it reliable he installed a new wiring harness and I have done the Boyer Ignition and two new Honda switch gear.

 

I have the original exhaust and will have that restored when funds allow!!

Nice. The R3 is also quite sexual. If I was a teenager I'd be selling my soul for one.

I'm waiting for someone to put a Banshee engine into an R3 Chassis.....
