Never tried a 650b but from my experience riding 26 and 29, 26 iv'e found quicker on tight courses and initial acceleration, 29 eats up everything else. I would think 650b would have best compromise of good and bad.

I have a 29er which I love but recently tried a 650b. I was very impressed with it and if truth be told if I was in the market again I would go for a 650b over a 29er.

If you could only have one bike, then 650b is probably the way to go. But if you can afford more than one bike, then I would have a 26 inch "Jonkershoek play bike" and a 29 inch xc/marathon bike. Anyway that's my dream garage.

From what I've seen you will get more serious answers with a 27.5 vs 29er question, than with a 26er vs 29er question.

Never ridden a 29'er but very happy with my 2 x 650b's (Flash and Scalpel) - def. rolls better than a 26" and still nimble and nifty

which year model Scalpel did you convert?

I was also recently considering between a 650b or 29'er. Ended up going for a 29'er.

My reason was because, like you, my goal is 3 day stage events. Over the longer distances the 29'er takes less out of you.

I was also surprised that I smashed my PBs on tight sections with my 29'er where I thought I would be way behind my 26'er times. So it doesn't look like I have lost anything on the tight trails by moving up to 29.
