I would go for a health check 1st to exclude diabetes etc. If all is in order, some gym work will do wonders. My wife's uncle is 83 years and he still gyms everyday and is very healthy

the only way to gain muscle mass is to lift weights or do some other form of resistance training, backed up with appropriate levels of protein in the diet.

As we get older, our testosterone levels also drop making it harder to hold on to muscle. In addition to this, our bone density starts dropping, making us more fragile

Join a gym (or a good CF box), lift some weights, eat some steak and take some Creatine.

The good news is that the more you do, the more your body switches back on production of testosterone and you will feel younger.

In the good old days I had the same problem. I was doing amateur horse racing and was too light so needed to put on a few kg's.

I was recommended Ensure which is a meal replacement shake. If you want to put on weight, you have it in between meals instead of replacing meals. It is used for people to pick up weight after operations, cancer etc.

I was already eating a lot of food so eating more food was not an option.

Myostatin (blockers) :whistling:

On a more serious note, Others and Nolipoli mentioned what I was going to, have some blood tests done and have your testosterone levels checked.

It’s not often you hear about someone who battles to put on weight. I have consistently weighed 68 kg for 30 years, +/- 1 kg. I've never had to worry about food or diets or managing weight gain that most people struggle with.

I lead a well above-average active lifestyle; I have Polar records right back to 2005, and average 7.9 hours/week activity for those 9 years. This is made up of high intensity exercise: cycling and surf-skiing. And 20 years of competitive squash before that.

However, in the last 2 years or so, I have steadily started to shrivel away, now down to 64 kg. This loss is all muscle mass because I never had any body fat to lose in the first place…!! My age is now 55, which understandably has something to do with the wasting away – but not everything. My wife says I look haggard and hammered…she’s on my case to eat more and beef up.

I am pretty fussy about what I eat and do keep a subconscious track of carb and protein intake; if anything I don’t eat enough protein. I do know from years of racing that the LCHF diet won’t work for me.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to beef up, how to put on weight, specifically muscle mass. (Please don't say pump iron and eat supplements...)

This post is as annoying as "please help me, I have too much cash and dont know what to do".

Go see an endocrinologist and have all the tests done - they are expensive but worth it.

The old bodybuilding maxim is to use your goal weight x 2 = grams of pure protein you need to consume every day. It sounds easy but it is bloody hard to get the proper nutrition in day after day. That's why most guys go the whey protein supplement route (Optimum Nutrition/ON is the best brand but expensive).

pump iron and eat supplements...

What else do you want to hear?

To build muscle you need high power low rep excercise...

And you need protein, protein and protein... (a younger me used to have 6 raw eggs with 500ml of milk each morning, ugh!)

Oh, you can always use steroids

You've answered your own question. You know what you are doing wrong, but you are looking for a magical quick fix that doesn't involve you changing the way your are currently doing things, both in terms of your diet and in terms of your training...

In other words, you know that you need to:

a) eat more to ensure you get enough carbs, fat and protein

b) do some form of balanced all body exercise (it doesn't have to be pumping weights)

I have found that in order to change these habits, I first try to do something distinctly different for 1 day every week.

If I were you, I'd have a 600g T-bone steak followed by a waffle once a week just because you can and make sure you and review your current diet to make sure you get enough nutrients during your normal every day meals.

In terms of training, take one session a week and do something different. It could be a short session (literally 20 minutes) of push-ups and pull-ups (assisted or unassisted depending on your upper body strength), running hills, swimming a few lengths, playing tennis or whatever you can do other than your normal workout for one day a week that will improve strength.

Try that for a while and see how it works.

I had a very similar issue but not with weight, it was flexibility. I knew I am/was way too stiff and I hoped for a quick fix that doesn't exist. So now I force myself to take 1 training session per week where the focus is 30 minutes of stretching before I do anything else.
