What is the difference between overtraining and survival ?

I know exactly what overtraining is suppose to be, but is there a difference in surviving the Freedom Challenge ?

Overtraining can be described as a point where a person may have a decrease in performance and plateauing as a result from failure to consistently perform at a certain level or training load exceeds their recovery capacity.[1] They cease making progress, and can even begin to lose strength and fitness. Overtraining is also known as chronic fatigue, burnout and overstress in athletes.[2][3] It is suggested that there are different variations of overtraining, firstly monotonous program over training suggest that repetition of the same movement such as certain weight lifting and baseball batting can cause performance plateau due to an adaption of the central nervous system which results from a lack of stimulation.[1] A second example of overtraining is described as chronic overwork type training where the subject may be training with too high intensity or high volume and not allowing sufficient recovery time for the body.[1] It is important to note the difference between overtraining and over-reaching; over-reaching is when an athlete is undergoing hard training but with adequate recovery, overtraining however, is when an athlete is undergoing hard training without the adequate recovery.

To survive the Freedom Challenge you are basically overtraining every day, yet we tell ourselves not to overtrain before the event.

Wouldn't it be better to teach your to teach your body to survive before the real game begins ?

Nice gentle, soaking rain has been falling in the Traka (the section between Willemoere and Prince Albert). That bodes well for the condition of the road.

You can thank me later :)

Winter has hit the Barkly/Rhodes area. Mountains grey/white this morning. Pack winter woolies. Perfect timing for Freedom Challenge. Good Luck to all riding.   Have a blast.

You all telling lies !!!! I went to the fortune tellers caravan last night and she said I should not even bother with warm heavy stuff . Weather gonna be perfect all the way and we need not worry . She writes the column in Huisgenoot about the Star signs so it must be true !!

Good luck to everyone starting tomorrow and all of you in the days ahead.  Enjoy the cold, and trails, and our beautiful country and the South African hospitality.  I have followed for years and look forward to all the updates - even more so this year as my husband is going to be participating for the first time (R2R - leaving on Monday 8 June).  Look after him for me - its gonna be weird to just leave him in Maritzburg with just a bike and a backpack and a couple of maps ;)

What's the hubbies name? Friends of mine that I've been helping with prep are leaving on Monday too. I'll be riding out with them. Good luck to your husband - hope he's packed the winter woolies.
