"FOR SALE: Still under guarantee / warranty"... Be aware of ads such as these, no matter how new the bicycle or bicycle part or accessory is, the original guarantee is intended for the original purchaser ONLY.

Guarantees and warranties cannot be transferred unless under written agreement and acceptance of the manufacturer or licensed distributor that they will transfer the guarantee or warranty over to you.

If you purchase a product second hand under such pretense you could be in for a world of disappointment when the company turns you away.

Attempting to make a guarantee / warranty claim if you are the second owner is a fraudulent action and can see you being charged as a criminal.

Avoid bike shops that will help you "sneak" in such a claim as they are rotten to the core and this is a perfect representation of how they handle their business.

Always approach the company directly or have a bike shop do it for you and obtain written consent from the manufacturer or licensed distributor.

All this BS about a warrantee only being for the original buyer is in my opinion complete bollocks.

It's time the cycling industry follow the motor industry. Bikes cost the same as a small car lately, and there is no first owner warrantee bollocks.

What's the difference between a s works and a 911 turbo Porsche. Both were driven/rode hard. But on a car the warrantee belongs to the car and not the owner.

Charged as a criminal? Wow, really?

Ja like last night the cops pulled me over because my one brake light was bust. Told me it's against the law to drive with a faulty brake light. What now?

Nearly asked him if farm murders weren't against the law anymore. Coz those guys don't get caught.

After consultation with legal council it was decided that it would be better to delete my written opinion regarding this matter.

Friend of mine bought a 2nd hand bike the other day that was still under guarantee. The guy who sold it told him if theres an issue within the next 2 years under the guarantee.. to just call him and he will take it back to the LBS he bought it from and process as if it was still his...

Very nice of him i thought as it take the bull out of the x-over sale...and still gives my friend some piece of mind..

Simple really

Each to their own. Your enjoyment may be my vice, my fun may be yours. Try to be honest, respect the real law if you can, if you can't, keep your opinion to yourself. Your words spoken on websites are in many a case the only testimony of your character people will /may/ can form: think about it. etc. etc. etc.

Ya that's how to avoid losing money from a company point of view. In my opinion if a warranty claim is truly a warranty claim then it should be awarded.

In my opinion if you have the receipt, and it's within the warranty period then you can claim. Like a microwave or a tv. But then the cycling industry has always had its own laws...

Completely out of the box but I wonder if a company declined warranty could you take legal action? Cos in theory there is no signed paperwork stating that you agreed to terms and conditions (1st owner bla bla)...

Or is that a bit too much of an American point of view. Lol

There's a massive difference, but only to further your (correct IMHO) point. A bicycle is such a simple device, especially compared to a car.

Pity - the original one was far more entertaining and confusing

:offtopic: The mild concussion that I have is probably to blame. Got sideswiped last night by a vehicle that didn't have working taillights, nor indicators.

So when one of our esteemed posters above started whining I went on a panado binge and wrote my original post while under the influence of caffeinated drugs. And guess how much frikken damage I have to my bakkie becasue of an flipping crapfly :cursing:

If the warranty could be handed over to a second owner, how many would agree to service books and regular intervals for their steeds? Bikes and cars are different. Warranties on cars are normally mileage- and time-defined, no? How would you control this for a bike?

Surely the original (or a copy perhaps) receipt stating the bikes serial number and the date of purchase and the length of the guarantee would be sufficient?
