So I assume you drive a Tata Indica as it will also get you to work?

Its not always about the bike but the rider skill as well,I don't think that bike is gonna make you any faster than the next guy, maybe you might think it will make you more superior to the guy on a cheaper bike

Agreed without a doubt its the rider that makes a bike fast but a good well fitted bike does help you become a better rider

I have always found it cheaper to buy the same spec bike that is not a spaz.. by about 30K..LOL

If I were your boss, I would warn you to lay off the booze during the day. Base model Epic is R30 000, so with your logic all other brands dual suspension 29ers are free. Thats terrific news dude. Thanks

Good bike will make you faster, a little bit, but its still faster. I recently bought a Epic with carbon rims etc etc, its about 2,5 kg lighter than my previous bike. It does make a big difference. I also ride it more, because I enjoy it more.

My point was rather that people buy things like cars, bikes etc. for different reasons. Some just want the minimum that will do the job, others because they like the style and or colour and of course there are those that buy merely to be better than the guy next door as you say.

I have looked at the epic range and like the frame and the saddle .For me the fork is the least important part .Sid xx and fox will do just fine and i prefer 2x10 with xtr brakes .i prefer my own builtup wheelset .So if the frame is around R35000 you can still have a sworks for R70000 .More than R35000 for any frame is ludicrous anyway

Scary thing is you can put a brilliant rider on a Makro special and they will kick the guy on the Spez ass, have a look at the Bike life site where they have a link to all the different trails in Rsa have a look at the one for Karkloof and see what Greg Minnaar does on a cyclocross bike.

LOL. Not really, and I have a mate who did that... Donkey (used to be here) represented SA at the student champs in China a couple years back. Before that, he won a Raleigh M Trak and decided to try his hand at a fun ride - 60km or so, I think it was. He came dead last. Gears conked out, as did the brakes, bearings and everything else.

So no - not on a makro /game special. On an entry level bike, maybe. But not on a makro special

On Saturday i passed a real nerd looking dude (he had a small mirror attached to the front of his helmet plus a mirror on his handle bar) riding a real old (7 speed) road bike with mud gaurds, foam grips on the handle bars (you get the picture) his cranks (or something) were creaking and squeeking...big mistake for me on my 8500 swissies carbon Argon18 TT bike with zipp 404 tubbies to go past him....he stayed on my wheel and a few minutes later passed me without even looking at me (i waved and greeted hello at him when i passed him), well it took a few km's of damn hard effort for me to catch, pass and eventually drop him (typical male atitude my wife said when i told her about it).

Actually i think he turned off on another route....luckily for my pride :whistling:

Dont get me wrong im a huge Niner fan and i ride one aswell, but only one bottle on the whole frame is def a huge no no.

And with real technical stuff you cant have a bottle on your seatpost it just doesnt work

Try get a X Lab Gorilla bottle cage...it really works

I fell myself straight into Durbanville Hospital at a rockgarden on a singletrack in Jonkershoek, from forgetting to unluck the shock on my hardtail. A specialist , Dr Frikkie Rademan, (who happens to be a MBTer) attended to me and has a Epic Marathon. He convinced me to buy one. Due to the Brain in the front shock, no more forgetting and un/locking shocks. I went and bought one as well. (I suppose to make up for the lack of talent) Its a lot of moola, but I agree with Johny B. Its a great bike and my case, its cheaper on the medical bills.
