I like that. Simple and cost effective. If it end up being a bit unstable, perhaps put 3 bases in to form a lax 'L' shaped stand.

I don't think it'll work, it might hold up one, maybe two bikes, but more than that and it'll probably topple over, You will need some sort of support for the legs:

An A-frame will still be a lot sturdier though

Heath Robinson style all I can do is try. The bases are solid concrete at 65kg each thats 130kg. If I'm not happy then we'll just add more steel. The last thing I want is a couple of hundred grands worth of gear falling over.

You could always use a steel cable run through the cross bar at each end instead of steel to achieve the same result a la tent style. Slide a hosepipe over the cable and it will be visible and less of a trip hazard.

For less than 2 hours out of my life.... R80.00 in extra's, a trip the the local hardware shop and a few broken Umbrella's out the back of the Restaurant. BOOM

And a big thumbs up to you guys for leading the way.

All that is left to do is sticker the thing up.

Great stuff. I love it when recycling happens so elegantly. I think you have earned the right to post another picture that shows the name of the restaurant prominently.
