Prices at Shops - what are they smoking

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's just me that's lost but on this thread there is genuine concern for the price of a jar of butt cream, and yes prices on anything you buy these days seem high and yet on a thread next door there's a hubber buying a R 170 K F8 Dogma.

I heard on Saturday that the price is in fact R185k and not R170k.

You should give it a go, porn can be very enlightening .

Or depressing depending on your point of view.

Although they not my regular bike shop but living in Boksburg its quite easy to compare prices, within close proximity we have Sportsman's warehouse, Cajees, Cyclelab and slightly further down the road Tour de Frans and what I've found is Cyclelab are NOT the most expensive overall. I do support them on occasion as they give something back to cycling by hosting regular MTB and road rides for all, members of the club or not.

kind off topic but going to a mtb funride on the weekend after some 2 years away I was fairly surprised at the amount of high end carbon on the back of high end SUV's......lots of money being spent on this 'sport' by well off middle aged office exec types.......

so, ja, some shops cater for a certain slice of the market and price accordingly, but simply Assos anything is going to put you off if you are even remotely considering value for money.

I justify the costs, by us not smoking or drinking, and we also don't do movies etc.

don't do movies either.download off Netflix and watch at home.

no need to sit on a wet broken chair and listen to other peoples phones ringing.

I'm late to the original topic but its simple... don't shop at cyclelabs!

They charge ridiculous prices and don't give any service with it.

I'm not associated with any bike store, just my experience with them multiple times before i came to this conclusion.

Maybe of interest for some people and perhaps its nothing new and applies to all bike stores out there... but during one of my buying experiences with them i was accidentally shown a price list which included their wholesale price. To give you an idea of the margins they were making 2 years ago on a bike retailing at just over R50k, their wholesale price was around R27k. I'd love to get paid R20k for putting it together and giving a 1 yr service.

Its easy to find cheaper prices online so i don't understand why people buy from them. But more than enough do to keep them in business.

Bull dust.

Was looking for a specific Rear Light (as per attached picture).

Started shopping around, prices varied from R110.00, (Sportsmans Warehouse) to R85.00. Visited my LBS and he was just busy unpacking his new stock and apologised to me that the price went up a bit, it is now R65.00.

I just smiled at him, saying I understand and that I will take two.

So yeah, we are being ripped big time, and yes, it does pay to shop around but not forget about your LBS.

BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER (CHEAPER)

Yes that's exactly my point - it's unbelievable. I have no reason to lie, i saw an email from the distributor to the cyclelabs sales guy with a table of the different prices for each model in columns beside each other. There was no mistake.

After negotiating them down as much as i could get, i still bought the bike because they were the only local shop to have that brand/model. Another reason why they are probably still in business.

SA Bike retailers are becoming more competitive than the offshore guys now days. Consider the currency, shipping and import duties and in more than most cases buying local is lekker. It used to be that SA consumers were paying a huge premium to offshore guys, but that has turned around... eg, I bought a BMC roadbike for R75k vs racycles $7200 (=R77k before shipping and tax). That applies to brands like Assos as well... and lets face it if you want Assos, expect to pay the premium, be it here or offshore?

You should try us for a quote... Or any online store as a matter of fact.

i do buy from you Naas and CWC, the only reason i called them was because i could get a 30k cyclelab voucher for R25k and was hoping they could match or come close to your asking price that way i'll actually score something off the deal.
