Jhb CIty just tweeted these numbers to report suspect activity

City of Joburg@CityofJoburgZA

Please report anonymous tip-offs on illegal power connections,cable theft&vandalism to 0800 002 587/(011) 490 7911 / 7900 / 7553

Whether you will find anyone who cares on the other side of the phone remains to be seen, so far I haven't had much luck. For instance:

- guys digging up the pavement to make illegal elec connections, phoned City Power and SAPS, no one came

- stopped a thief with a few man-hole covers in a hessian bag on a trolley, could not get a response from Metro or SAPS

- caught a thief stealing fuses from the local (un-locked) sub-station, called City Power Security, they came and went, and left it unsecured. SAPS did not arrive. Thief did not respond to pepper spray, although he had a drugged-crazed look in his eyes (and a massive panga in his bag full of loot which he abandoned)

"World Class" African City....

Yup, beckoning 3rd world dump more like it. As a local boy of many years standing, breaks my heart it has to be said.

And as a cyclist you get to see the decay and neglect close-up. I've been taking cell phone pics when ever I can, thought of making a montage of the mayors face with all the pics of missing man hole cover, mains wires hanging out of street lights, decrepit storm water drains etc etc

Question is what is Jhb City doing about it? not enough is quite obvious. For starters in term of the looting they could regulate the Scrap Metal dealers, close down all the informal-sectors feeders, not allow cash transactions, introduce stricter licensing, get the Metro Cops involved in inspections and busts, etc etc.

They could also be pro-active about maintenance, as it stands they will only respond to a logged call. And they get confused as to why you are reporting something when its not to do with your property.

What exactly IS the problem with lack of response?

Is it an undermanned police force? Is this sort of thing low on the priority list compared to the more serious crimes that go on?

I must say it looks very much like a petty criminals paradise in terms of risk v profit.

Just a lack of basic organisation imo, too may people in positions they shouldn't be in. Whilst Rome burns.

And the Metro police should be involved in protecting municipal assets, that's what the idea was about integrating various local gov security services.

Take the local substations for example, it seems to be happening all over the Jhb: break-ins,. theft and looting. And we suffer. Now they Mayor wants to install fancy biometric security, yea right throw a fancy high tech gizmo at the problem and it sort it out. Wrong! Fit decent locks & hasps, radio-alarm linked intruder detection, Fence the properties and maintain, maintain, maintain! No-brainer dude!

It's not my job.

Standard government employee response.

We reported a leaking water pipe outside our house twice now. It's been over 4 weeks and no one has responded.

Money is leaking out everywhere but yet they don't have money to maintain infrastructure.

Someone needs to get of their @ss and start doing their job. At this stage they are just doing crisis management by fixing serious problems and they aren't even doing that very well.
