Google Glass and Cycling

As takelot.com has now made the google glass available in SA I tried finding more out about uses in cycling.

The first use is that it is actually very useless. At R26K not enough people will ware them to activate some of the social features that the apps promise and that is well outside my budget for the next ... forever.

Looking around I noticed that there are a few apps for cyclists already developed. And probably the most notorious of social cycling platforms STRAVA has developed their google glass app.

here are some links.

There are also benefits for the novice bike mechanic.

Roll forward mass production and competition in the market and MAYBE this technology will become affordable.

I must say having real time info available while riding especially route information will come in handy. Steaming video directly while you cycle in emergencies or that awesome wow moment also seems very useful.

Not getting one this decade though.

It will develop much faster than you think. Mark my words in 10 years time you will have all the functions of a tablet in Glass on our faces with retina scanning controls.

The thing is the amount of processor and sensors will lead to new apps coming out that allow you to bring new functionality to the fore, which will result in things like Strava 2.0, location and view sharing etc etc.

Its going to be the next wave - wearable technology integrated with sensors on your body, and integrated with your bike sensors.

Exciting stuff.

Would be quite cool I suppose, but unless I'm riding as a pro I have no real need to view all that data all the time. I barely look at my Garmin 510 unless it's to have a quick glance at my HR. The rest of the info is just for interest sake when I ride.

Having never used one of these I must say I'd be a little concerned with my attention getting taken away from the trail/course with info that really is not going to make me any faster by knowing it in real time. I have little enough skill as it is without tempting another off by having a look at the numbers as they become available.

Frankly, I ride based on how I feel at the time and if I'm poked, no amount of data is going to speed me up, likewise, bar my heart rate spiking too high, I'll not be slowing down if I'm feeling frisky!

I said make video not watch. But yes that will happen. Luckily they will be banned at races I'm sure. I just wonder how it can influence navigation races where the trail is not marked.

I don't know about cycling and Google glasses. I ride my bike to get away from computers and stuff. I just need something to track my ride. The route I will figure out myself when I get there or when I get lost!

Actually...you said STEAMING video... :-)

Ja i dunno, firstly the available screen size is really small and i spent money so as not to have to wear glasses so imo not really keen on the idea.

Personaly i think it will be a detraction while doing stuff like riding / driving / walking that requires concentration and reaction. Its bad enough with smart phones and people listening to music / talking while walking they tend to be less aware of their surroundings. Anyway maybe the market movers of the world will get their way eventually and race organizers will have to adapt.

Stopped in lieu of better tech. Apparently. It's still mega exciting.

Tesla's Hyperloop, this, Google's DeepMind (exciting and also a little terrifying) and also all sorts of little techy gadgets which will most likely in 3 to 5 years time be fully integrated into one single device...

Boom. Love it.

Indeed. Some interesting stuff going on, but uptake is still slow. Was pointed out that lollipop is still not even in 0.1 % of devices.

Samsung developing their own OS...

Tizen. Yeah. But it wasn't that great initially, apparently. But knowing Samsung, it won't be long until it works. That, or it could be the Jubba the Hutt of the OS world.

I'm keeping my eye on the guys at ind.ie as well. Maybe still pie in the sky for a long time, but having alternatives to iOS, android and windows should be interesting, although one of the developers mentioned Samsung were looking at going back to windows mobile - what has Google gone to piss them off I wonder.

Read the other day that it had been shelved, which is a pity as think there were opportunities for the likes of the cycling industry, linked to garmin for heads up info, maybe even to the backtracker radar system/camera that could give you an image of closing traffic...and even as a cam for your cycle... Same as dash cams are making a difference with driving/insurance claims etc
