Rogue Riding - Tygerberg trails

Recommended Posts

Rogue riding is a big problem on our trails and we would like to inform the greater mountain biking community that further steps are being taken to prevent free loaders from riding our trails. This will include both visible policing, name and shame and blog/strava monitoring.

So if you wish to go and set a new Strava record on a Tygerberg members only trail, please be sure to first purchase your discounted 2014 club membership on www.tygerbergmtb.co.za

Note to our club members:

please ensure that your bike boards are visible on your handebars and if you want to invite non-members, please stick to the trails that offer day permits (Hooggekraal, Meerendal and Contermanskloof).

Note to your club members:

Please do not assume that we are all:

A - rogue riders

B - club members

We are entitled to ride if we have paid our fee and any member who decides to shout out at us to display a board instead of stop and ask is rude and obnoxious.

You want to ask me about payment for the day have the courtesy to stop your "Strava" time and ask me politely and you will be shown a pass on "Conties", not sure how to prove payment at Hoogekraal and I haven't ridden Meerendal so don't know if there is a tear off paper.

It could be a bit of a problem at Meerendal if the rider has used the honesty box, how do the prove they have paid?

I agree with your sentiments re the day permits and proof. Hooggekraal, contermanskloof and Meerendal are managed by the landowners and the club is not policing these trails. We will request members to be polite if coming across people with no bike boards on these trails.

The situation on Hillcrest, Bloemendal and green corridors is different and if you do not have a bike board and have chosen to ride past the "Members only" signs then we will give you a hard time. The club rules clearly state that your bike board must be on the front of your bike. That does not include wrapped around your fork, in your pocket or left at home.

The bloke I encountered at hillcrest yesterday refused to respond to requests to show his bike board and tried to outride me. When he realised I was being persistent he told me to "mind my own business". It doesn't take much trail policing to end up with a bad attitude against rogue riders.

It could be a bit of a problem at Meerendal if the rider has used the honesty box, how do the prove they have paid?

Meerendal are managing their own trails and I presume that the security at the gate will be taking over the responsibility of issuing day permits. In the interim, please be honest guys.

Definition of integrity: doing the right thing even if nobody is there to see it.

Would have loved to see this  Must have been quite a blow to the ego when he couldn't outride you....

I say name and shame! Especially those guys that flaunt their illegal rides on Strava...

I am from Kimberley and I know people who rode the trails without paying.  I explained to them why they should pay for using the trails,   I actually convinced them to join the club, which they did.

No names will be mentioned because they were not informed about how things work and they were new to cycling.

And I am planning to ride those trails in December, where do I pay and what do I do.  The one Sunday at Meerendal, there was a dude taking money and giving you a sticker.  But in the week there was nobody to take my payment.

What happened the the stravasshole who got busted last year on Kliprug after insulting the landowner's wife?

sorry if it's been answered but couldn't find it, and consider it good info as a follow up to deter other rogues.

Some of the trail marshals on the Helderberg MTB trails are taking day permits and ties along on their rides. When you get stopped for not displaying a bike board, you have two choices. Buy a day permit on the spot, or else get escorted off the trail. This is not a convenient mobile day-permit purchase service, but an enforcement of the club's 'no board - no ride' rule. So, we don't carry change, don't take credit cards and won't accept anything else in lieu of the R40 day-permit fees.

Membership will be further discounted (probably start october) which may be worthwhile if you're wanting to ride frequently for the month. We are also looking into day permit setups before the silly season. Currently, R30 will get you access to Hooggekraal or Contermanskloof or Meerendal for a day

The person responsible did own up but sadly he was just the last in a long list of people who had alienated the landowner. Currently, the landowner is not prepared to have mountain bikers on his property except for the occassional event.

That said, according to a popular website, we can see that Carlos Rodrigues, Bernd Barbrock, Mimi Viviers and Blaize Pascall have ridden Kliprug despite it being closed (and we wonder why landowners think badly of mountain bikers

The club used to be responsible for collecting day permits and a person was employed during busy times to collect fees. The landowner at Hooggekraal is busy looking for somebody to sell day permits on weekends - pm me if interested (suitable for a student)

at bottelary hills the day-permits are temp bikeboards with today's date etc on.

so its quite clear who is rogue riding the trails.

i use to purchase them from the 24 engen garage at the bottom of bottelary road.

now i dont need to anymore seeing that i purchased the yearly membership.

I've paid the Meerendal honesty box every time i go there, and every time i wonder how i will prove that i have paid if i am asked if i have paid.
