Rims - how wide is enough?

I have come to the conclusion that I need wider rims for my Trance, to help stop it trying to kill me, but I don't know how wide is enough.

The standard S-CX2 rims have in internal size of 19mm, which have given trouble with Nobby Nics 2.25s as well as WTB Wierwolves 2.25s.

I run 2.0b Front and 2.5b Rear pressure but I still get burps and sideways rolls.

It looks like the widest reasonably priced (£30ish) rim I can find is from superstar and has a 25mm internal width. Will this be enough?

(Also interested if anyone knows whether I can just rebuild onto existing wheelset?)

Which Superstar rims are you looking at? I have the AM490 on my Ragley Piglet, and at 23mm internal width, they stretch a Nobby Nic 2.4 very nicely. I run 1.8bar front and rear tubeless and don't get any rolling.

Trust me it will be enough.

WRT to rebuilding with existing spokes etc., you need to check the ERD (effective Rim diameter) of the rim vs the new rim. On the S-XC2s it's on the sticker on the side of the rim.

NB: Superstar don't ship via royal mail to South Africa anymore, you're looking at GB80 for postage with a courier  (Don't know if anything has changed again in the last 2 weeks)

Dang! That makes it £140. Add in a fork and an Angleset and...

It might end up being cheaper to just switch to a Reign.

Edit: it comes with P-AM2 rims at 24mm internal.

2nd Edit: it looks the doctor is going to take away any upgrades, at minimum

WTB Team IT25 is what you want . got same problem with 2.25 tyres on 19 rims . It does not work . Will order my rims from CRC soon , just need to get proper hubs and am looking at Nukeproof .

I see Dialdbikes has a few nice wide rims in stock as well. If my skill allows it I will buy myself a new wheel at the end of the year: Darmoor Rocket rime with a Hope 2 rear hub

But should you feel wider is better you can always have a look at a trials rim with the average width being 47mm  post-19039-0-37853400-1411554175_thumb.jpg

Went through the whole wheel research phase a short while ago.

I ended up buy these Hope Enduro 23mm Internal. Literally a few days after they were launched. So there were no reviews in the rim around:

It was between these and the Flow EX. Lovely rim.

I don't feel like I need the 2mm more, that the Flow offers. And these do tubless well. Just forget Stans tape, use Gorilla rather. There is a  ridge that stans battles to fold over.

I've been running a set of WTB St i25's and they have been very good. They were very well priced on CRC. The Frequency i25 will be a bit stronger but at a slightly elevated price. 650b & 29r are available locally. 26 not.

Sorry to go back to basics here...

So a "wide" rim, should stop the tyre from rolling at lower pressures? And stop burping? Are these the reasons for going wide? More traction I imagine. Wide Lightenings are almost 30mm internal - that's a lot wider than the Arches and Flows...

Anything I'm missing?
