heck, you are right as well. I havent checked fork prices since 2013, but even this fork on CRC on clearance sale isn't cheap at roughly R4500. The rest are just... shocking!

So assuming the OP getts the stancions replaced by at least equivalent quality for R3400. Does that include or exclude labour and materials used?

just looking at the price of my sid

Have you ever tried removing the stanchion from the crown? They were put in there at one stage, so I'm guessing they either screw out, or they have been put in with a damn strong epoxy.

But, if you could get them out, I bet there are people who would be able to re-coat them, and re-grind them down to size.

We do it often with the motorbike stanchions we need to restore, and while admittedly, the motorbike stanchions are steel and a bikes are alloy, they were done once in the factory, so they must be able to be done again.....

Interesting - a quick browse on the web shows that a few people have actually been successful in removing the stanchions and having them re-coated and ground back to size, *but* it's a costly exercise - around 450 pounds, and there's no guarantee whether the stanchions are as tightly secured in the crown as they were when they came from the factory.....

Or you could just dip them without removing from the crown...

Just another reason the Lefty is so superior, this will not happen to the stanchion on a Lefty. Ever.

Just ride it into the ground whilst you look for a new fork and keep an eye on the oil levels as will leak more through the dust wipers at that point.

it is not going to fail, change the wipers and learn to service it on a regular basis and ride until it becomes too bad or you have found another fork.

Replacing the stanchions might only theath the symptom and not the cause.

If the bushes in the lowers are damaged also, it will do the same to the new ones you put in.

Like it was said here, ride it till it falls apart, like a chain that is past the 1.0 mark it has done the damage now just get the last few kms out of it while looking/saving for new stuff.

Then replace all and use the old as an tyre hanger in the garage etc.

2 things - first, find me a replacement stanchion. Second, the crown deforms plastically when the stanchion is pressed in, so the replacement will never be as secure. Not what you need on the bit of your bike that holds the front wheel on.

Bushings get replaced as part of the deal. Refer to my last post re cost of repair vs replacement.

You'd be surprised at what I've seen...

My job is to grind and recoat metal components. You could do it if they are out of the crown.

To build up you need to grind down all damage first. The replate / chroming is then applied and back for grind or polishing.

How you get them out the crown is the trick as i think they are shrunk fit. pressing them out will most certainly bend something.

if some one in JHB have a scrap set I am willing to try them to see if we can do it locally.

Ping Dave Marshall, he seems to have plenty. I've got quite a collection too, but I'm in CT. If you don't come right give me a shout and I'll send you one. I'd be interested to see what you can achieve.
