I've got massive barends on a riser bar.  My handlebar resembles a texan longhorn bull.  So yes, I'm a dork.  Fell with them recently, clipped a tree, but they are here to stay.  Love to climb with them

I remember reading something somewhere about how bar ends are responsible for a very specific type of injury to the torso. Can't remember anything else unfortunately which makes this anecdote barely worth sharing.

I used to have them, got tired of them 'grabbing' anything that brushed past - they were the cane creek rubbery ones - so pulled them off and have never missed them.

Each to their own.

Bar ends cause more abdominal injuries like spleen raptures when you go over the handlebars .I took mine off before JB2C and developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands because of that  .I have gotten used to not having them on my race bike .The ergon grips are wide at the ends so you can use them almost like a bar end

Had a R200 voucher from cajees so I bought these. Need some open ended grips and I'll put them on and give it a try. Thanks for all the pointers/comments. post-44041-0-55678100-1414086453_thumb.jpg

Opens shoulders and improves Breathing? ?... Are you Serious? ? All bar ends does is rotates your wrists 45 deg.

Yes, sir. Works for me.

First, it's 90 degrees, not 45. Second, hand position moves out wards, alters upper body position and posture.

So, like I say, works a treat for me.

What I like about bar ends it that they give you a different hand position to let your hands rest a bit on longer rides. And they can offer a nice grip for short steep climbs. But they do get in the way and since I put on longer bars I have taken them off.

Came across these today. Not exactly bar ends, but also designed to let you vary your hand position: TOGS

I'd be keen to give them a go. Looks like they also won't get in the way like bar ends would.

Back in the days of 26" wheels, narrow bars on ridiculously long stems I always rode with Cane Creek bar ends. Super comfy and very long lasting. Have a look at them. My experience is that there are so many handlebars out there that you are bound to find one that I comfortable. I had to go through 3 bars to end up with a comfy one. Won't ride bar ends again as aI have no issues with being uncomfortable now.

Finally got the bits and pieces together to but the bar ends on. And I did it all by myself... Wooohooo

Great tip from YouTube using a syringe to get the old ones off.

First test ride tomorrow night :)

You have to swap them around, left to rigt, and vice versa. The flat bit is supposed to be for your palms, with the longer round bits for your fingers to go round.

You may want to drop the fronts slightly as well.

Enjoy testing, and the comfort

Had bar ends on my 26er, and I loved them. The handle bar was only about 610, so the extra width helped to open my lungs up when climbing, and with different hand positions.

Have not used them on my 29er, and I have not missed them. 29er has a 710 flat bar, so there is already enough width.
