Texting while riding

I really dislike rants but every now and again something happens......

Driving home today from the studio I was negotiating a fairly narrow road between the top of Munro drive and Louie Botha ave. Upper Houghtan I think it is. Time was just after 16:30. Roads fairly busy already.

This twit on a moutain bike was riding towards me. Behind him was a car crawling along quite patiently as he was half away across his quite narrow lane. As I gor close I noticed he was riding with one hand on the bars and suddenly wobbled over in my direction. I slowed down and moved out his way.

As I passed him I noticed the reason for his erratic riding is he was FLIPPING TEXTING!!! He didn't even look up as I went past. Totally oblivious.

True Darwin Award material. He must be related to the bloke that took a hammer and chisel to the mortar on Monday.

We as cyclists risk our lives by being on the road..its getting worse because I believe that cellphones in cars are to blame..texting, calling, updating vleisbook etc..how can you ride a bike while phoning or texting..shocking..

And if we do it, we have no right to bitch when a car does it

Maybe with an old Nokia thats got knoppies, but this touch screen and predictive text nobody will make out a word anyway. I can hardly press the right buttons sitting on the toilet let alone a bicycle

Bell - to warn others that she's passing;

Lock - so no would try steal it (two, nogal);

Front Light - so she can see the people that she needs to ring the bell at.

Get this every day on the roads.  And the biggest culprit:  Commuters.  What can be so important to text that you can't pull off the road and do your txt?

If I am on the bike and I get an message, being what ever, that person can wait for a reply.  I am not going to make a phone my boss, and neither will my friends, family of my fiancee get a reply from me when I am on the bike.

Had a guy talking on his phone last might walking in the road.  Screamed at the idiot.  He was all over the place.
