Road race tyre choice

I currently run Gatorskins on my road bike. With the 94.7 and then the Coronation DC coming up in November, I'm considering buying some tyres specifically for races. I'm no racing snake - I'm planning on a 3.15 94.7 and I run Campagnolo Zonda wheels on my Bianchi. The wheels are for clinchers.

Questions:

1. Is there any value on considering going tubeless? I think the Zonda's can handle it.

2. Is it worth buying a race day set of tyres?

3. If yes to 2, which are best?

I run conti GP4000 for racing and training and they rock. With tubeless you tire choices are limited and swapping out between training and racing is a total bitch.

With tubeless you tire choices are limited ...

And probably expensive too.!

Most top end tyres (Continental/Michelin/Vittoria/Schwalbe etc) compare favourably and comes down to personal preference and budget.

Get them on special like the GP4000 @ CWC now.

Hey graham, going from gators to any foldable road tyre makes a big difference. Solomons has some good deals on conte ultra race tyres, and they feel great on my race wheels compared to the gators on the training wheels. Dont really think going top end with tyres is worth the money sometimes.

I have done the long look and study and info etc. etc. etc.

GP4000s are very good tyres and last long to boot.  I get around 10 000km on them.

I changed to Gatorskins for training and the HUGE difference in rolling resistance on the rollers can definitely be felt....or maybe I am just weird but it is there.

If you don't mind budget, your best tyre would be Vittoria Open Corsa.

Over the years I went from Conti Gator to Ultra sport/ Race then to 4000s and with each change I could feel a positive difference in ride. if there are budget constraints, then the Conti Ultra Sport or Race tyres will suffice (and you'll be able to buy 3x of them for the price of 1x 4000s)
