DominionZA Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 How long is the half marathon? Just started in April so not quite ready for a 70km yet. Did the 45km MM so think I should handle the half marathon (depending on distance). Trying to get a good few events under my belt.

Squier Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 is the cut-off time for the ultra 5hours? I would assume that that is 17h00 in the afternoon. The cutt off last year was 8 hours.

As JCZA said, the marathon does not look difficult enough (on paper at least) for that purpose. The toughness of the route should not be a function of the length - I would have expected about 1500m of climbing in the 70km... The National Champ is crowned on the Ultra. The winner of the Marathon gets a firm handshake. If the Marathon is too easy, ride the Ultra. Problem solved. I was in between the two, but opted for the Marathon. Easy way out, I know...

VG always warms up beautifully ... But... The starts this time of year are painful. Whatever the temp is where you're coming from, knock off a dozen degrees, or more. "Leeu kop koud" time of year.

The senior, sub vet, vet men, elite women and senior women can only be eligible for their titles on the 70km. If the Marathon is too easy, ride the Ultra. Problem solved. As I understand it - if you are a vet and you win the ultra, you will not be the SA champ in your cat, or at all, as the vet champs can only be contested over the UCI/CSA distance for vets, which is 70km... I might be wrong...
