There was a string like this some years ago. Lets just say that you need to go and google certain anti-aging people, but they actually threatened some of the posters with legal action for anti comments so it got a bit hairy.

Lets say the wife does the surgery thing and the husbands being CxO's and having lots of money in Jhb Northern Suburbs (pick your area) spend the money on fancy carbon frames, and then what?

Some go faster juice.

Hey if you haven't got the time to train or the genetics and theres no testing, who will know. And your ego will get stroked big time.

Makes you feel like Superman. the energy just never runs out and the power on the big climbs is amazing.

Fastest I ever got was towards the front of A bunches in road racing and i think that if they had to screen a lot of the vets and the faster bunches on fun rides they would be horrified what they would find.

I reckon some of those guys would melt the glass beaker with their urine.

Ripped Fuel and Ultimate Orange had some scary stuff in them in their older formulations pre 2000.

I left my bottles behind at a race and a mate loaned me one of his which was his " food bottle". It was Ultimate Orange. I swear it made my scalp tingle and crawl but i was super strong. That stuff had synthetic E in it in big doses.

I have seen it all and then some - guys injecting etc in the bunch on tandem races. Guys sweating like horses when ephedrine and its variants were around. That doesn't happen with caffeine....

I must say, nothing concrete, but I also think so... :nuke:

Once you enter the murky waters of "amateur racing", you tend to question yourself a LOT.  Why is this guy faster than me....why did I drop here and there etc.

From 20 years of racing I have learned a VERY valuable lesson.  There will be guys faster than you.  There will be guys slower than you (Although they have more training in their legs).
But in the end you need to measure yourself with YOURSELF.  If you improve your own figures then there is progress, irrespective of where you end up in the race.

Once you start doing THAT, the other guys cheating won't bother you that much anymore.  If want to be so stupid to take PEDs then it is one them and their health and conscious.  In the end "amateur" racing is just for fun and if your ego is THAT big that you have to cheat to win at amateur racing then chances are you are not a very good example of a human being.....

Folks, understanding the difference between AAS (anabolic steroids) and HGH (growth hormone).

Like IQ of 2 says, growth hormone is the darling of the Anti Aging movement. It’s huge - about as big as the cosmetic surgery industry, which is a multi-billion dollar industry.

In fact, the Anti Aging movement (and HGH) and the cosmetic surgery industry are essentially all part of the same worldwide trend of 'self beautification'. Used to be a women thing, but now men are into it big time. Go into any Joburg mall and see the men often done up more than their wives these days, like peacocks.

Cosmetic surgery is so 80's. The Anti Aging movement is the new wave. Less surgery and more things like HGH which is non-invasive and does much more than tighten skin - makes the person look and feel younger in so many more ways.

HGH is not AAS. But most certainly, for those many thousands of wealthy South Africans taking it, it will definitely have a significant performance enhancing benefit as well. Significant.

But their justification for taking it will trump every other consideration (so you can forget about changing their minds): it makes them look and feel so much younger. And if it makes them faster athletes as well, that's just a very lekker bonus.

We live in the 'Me' world folks. Get used to it.

Strava made them do it, followed by social media, then a nickname and lot's of ego stroking within their circle of friends.

This gets exploited by entering as many events as they can, they become so moer moeg that they start looking for vitamins with a "boost" all over the place.

Their cellular provider "team kit" suddenly starts looking like a broadcast centre and boom, we have #legends

I don't know what the issue is with taking drugs while competing in events, considering what people are achieving.

When I was on drugs, I couldn't even find my bike.

The same problem that exist in pro cycling exists in amateur cycling...win at all cost. You will always find the guys that are willing to take the risks.

Here's a good article that describes HGH and the Anti Aging movement.

Sylvester Stallone is probably the most open and vocal celebrity promoting the Anti Aging thing.

Anyone watched one of the Expendables movies recently? What about his movie called 'Escape Plan'. Now watch those movies again and keep in mind you are looking at a 68 year old man.

People will say it's about their health and longevity, but at the end of the day it's all about ego. Simple as that.

But use of HGH and anabolic steroids among cyclists specifically is not only about ego. The other big factor is accessibility. I'm certain a whole swathe of cyclists don't take these substances because they don't know where to buy them (and too scared to take that first step to start actively sourcing the stuff). But if someone handed it to them, and explained how to use them, they would definitely try them.

And accessibility is becoming easier and easier by the day. I've seen adverts going up on Gumtree by Anti Aging companies peddling their wares (clenbuterol, CYX3, etc). I've also received the odd spam email from SA companies selling HGH, steroids, etc. And they have their websites up too - with all their prices listed for the world to see. And you can buy online and receive your package a few days later, delivered to your door. Easy peasy.

They're being very open and upfront about it now - they're actively pushing their product into the public space. Besides the local online steroids sellers, keep an eye out for those medical clinics in the wealthy suburbs just round the corner from your house, I'm sure. I don't want to get sued by someone so do the online search yourself: type in "anti aging clinic" and your town/suburb into Google and see what comes up. They're everywhere, folks.
