Is going 1x10 really worth it?!?

I went from 3x9 to 1x10 with spares for the 2x10 at hand. Not once have I considered changing it. Maybe for karoo to coast type riding.

I did the same, and it improved my ride a lot. loving the setup. Climb hills like a goat, and don`t worry about spinning out coming down, because gravity takes over

These lines sum it up the best i have seen.

I have always wondered about this.

Positive: the aesthetics

But

no performance benefit (which i suspected).

You dont see the Pro Peleton going to 1 x 11 do you ?

Might not see the pro peloton doing it, but a lot of the pros riding the Epic had 1x11 setups ^_^ and that is some crazy climbing

People might be put off by the Silverback name not being so glamorous .... but the Slider 1 is a flipping great handling bike and if you want you can also up the fork to a 150/160mm later on as I know they were testing the bike with this set up at one stage and I recon the frame can certainly make that fork length work.

the 130mm travel version review here - https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/137733-silverback-slider-1-650b-review/

2015 will have 135mm rear and 140mm fork - see the last page for a pic of the prototype I got to play with for a while.

The slider is running a 1 x 11 at a good price too.

I'm not one of those put off by names at all. Those 26er's I spoke to you about yesterday....2 of those babies were Silverback!!

Thanks for the reading material and pics you lucky bugger! Now you've just given me more to confuse myself with. Its see its the same colour as the 2015 Fuel ex, that must mean its quick :whistling: .

I'm also thinking (based on informed opinions) I must just bloody well stick to my 2 x 10 setup as much as the whole simplicity thing of 1 x appeals to me. More travel : Yes. HTFU on limited gears: NO. :cursing:

if you have a reasonable level of fitness a 40/42t on the cassette should get you up any climbs if you are running a 32t chainring.

If you also chase on flat sections and have the legs to push a big ring, then a dual ring setup would be better in my mind.

1x11 with a 10-42 does have a nice big range.

I gotta say though - when I ride my 1x10 (11-40) I do miss the smaller gaps in the gears. The shift from 13 to 16 and from 16 to 19 is jussssst too big for me.

SS from fun.

1x10 for fun/training

2x10 for racing (or 3x10 - whatever is on your bike). Course dependent!

That's my take on matters. If you only have 1 bike then 2x or 3x.

Thaaaat said - if you prefer simplicity to all out performance then 1x10 is really clean and simple.

Like all things in life - buy the equipment you want. That includes wheel size, number of gears, rigid/front shock/duallie, carbon/alu, sram/shimano etc.

Pretty much sums it up....for me anyway

Course and distance plays a big role. If you are only racing half marathons 1x10 is more than sufficient. The longer and steeper the course, the more inclined I am to go 2x10.

what is the ave distance of a marathon in MTB terms?

Agreed.

More distance and more climbing needs more gears

Crate Cruise is over 100km and a 1x10 is no issue at all. Even a 1x10 with a 11-34 on the back will be fine. Any race near Sabie over 40km - not so much!

I paid R600 for my raceface 34T chainring, that was the total cost. Kept same chain length as i had. As long as you have a clutch rear dérailleur youll have no chain drops.

Came from a 2x slx setup, so its 10speed now with 11-36 at the back

I can do groenkloof and hakahana which have some hectic climbs so i dont see an issue if youre fit. I do spin out at about 40-45 kmph but for me thats not an issue

Ill never go back to 2x.

Worth it in what way, weight savings, i dropped approx. 300g from the bike

Simplicity forsure, and it looks alot cleaner

I presume you have the clutch set to on? I see it on my XT derailer but haven't used it. Got 2x10. Is the clutch there for single blade setups or is there another use for it?

These arent the exact rules, but its basically around these numbers

35-50km = Half Marathon

50- 80km= Marathon

100+ = Ultra Marathon

Yeah this is good :) Thanks

Yes I set it to on, dropped chain twice when I forgot to put it on.

The clutch makes chain slap less if that's an issue on your 2 x setup. I never used it before I went to 1x.
