Hi Fellow cyclists

I am just starting with riding, and i would like to know if someone could point me in the right direction.

I am about 6 ft 1 ( 184cm ) and weight about 120kg.

1) does protein help during training

2) When must it be taken

3) will it help with saving my muscles and aid in weight loss.

Thanks for your help

1) does protein help during training - Not necessarily. Sufficient protein intake is however necessary to repair muscle tissue damaged during intense exercise.

2) When must it be taken. Either pre- or post training.

3) will it help with saving my muscles and aid in weight loss. Saving/repairing muscles - yes. Weight loss - protein will be one of many factors that will impact on weight loss. If you have a high body fat %, you'll need to make an entire lifestyle change, not just diet.

Thanks for your help

Don't decrease your protein intake. If you're an active person, you need high amounts of protein for various bodily functions, not just maintenance/building of muscle.

The basis for all training should a balanced diet.

Everything else ~ high fat, low carb / high carb, no fat etc etc are nothing more than fads, largely thanks to nonsense spread by people hoping to increase the size of their bank balances.

Let me guess. You are a Tim Noakes disciple?

Noakes has deciples? Sweet deal!

I was just surprised at your very firm assertion. Seemed very authoritative. You must be right.

Ok. Back to being adults. We're ruining the OP's thread. Perhaps someone qualified on the subject (I'm not) will provide some answers.

Having no authority on this matter, I found the low carb low fat "diet" to work for me. But mainly because I decreases my calorie intake.

It's simple math really..

If a train traveling at.. Sorry wrong problem.

If your body needs x calories to function. Eating less than that will cause you to burn fat to make up the deficit.

But best advice is to just make smart choices and plan your meals and training.

Edit: now 78kg from 95kg.

are you asking about cutting out carbs completely?

I am not a professor but there was only a couple of things that worked for me. I tried various diets and supplements but this was a see-saw effect. For 2 years I was stuck between 100kg and 94kg and in August I decided to do a low carb eating plan not a diet but just limit the amount of carbs I take in and stay away of sugar drinks, sweets and chips.

My weight has dropped to 90kg average. Now I just have to work harder to loose another 5kg.

I only use L-glutamine on my hard training days but that is to help my muscles recover.

Good luck and remember it takes time to loose the weight. There is no quick fixes to loose the weight.
