I think it makes it fair. like formula one...they can make the cars a lot lighter....

It prevents the team with the biggest budget to have an unfair advantage.

Formula one makes new rules every year to make the cars slower.

But in all seriousness they should make the weight limit 10kg.  Then more people can ride and even fat ou's like me have a better chance competing against the mountain goats.

Formula 1 has many rules to limit the influence of technology in winning races as opposed to human capability.

Damit, you beat me by a minute. Need to type faster.

Its more like the sport saying that all formula 1 cars can only use the chassis and engine specs that were used in 1999.

Besides, I'm sure Formula 1 have adjusted their weight limits over the last 15 years.

.

Cycling is about the rider, not the bike.

formula 1 is all about the car.

If f1 cars were limited to 1999 technology, we would have a far fairer outcome and the best drivers would consistently win and they could then be considered sportsmen.

But as I said, it's all about the car and the motor industry.

I'm not so sure. There have been technological advancements to Formula 1 cars since prior to 1999. Every generation seems to have that dominant car. Williams and active suspension. Red Bull and the blown diffuser as examples.

With regards to the weight limit. I agree, technology has moved on, the weight limit should be lowered.

As for looking at the rule. I read an article that said that "weight" as the determining factor might be replaced with strength testing thus as long as it is strong enough there would be no weight limit.

I recall that the weight limit was a safety consideration. Much like our speed limits on our highways were introduced in the 70's as a result of the oil crisis at the time. It has evolved into a road safety strategy. The reality is that today's cars are capable of doing much higher speeds and is much safer at these speeds than what my dad's Passat was in 1978, but other factors mean that our speed limits will probably not be raised anytime soon. I am quite happy for bike weights to remain at the current minimum. The result is that bikes are stiffer and stronger than in 1999, making for a better ride. I'd hate to be riding a 4,9kg noodle right now.

since when is formula one considered a sport?

In my mind, never. But lewis Hamilton is odds-on favourite to win the UK "sportsman of the year" award. Silly really.
