Tankman...what did u use for tank (air chamber), how do u attach the air in / out fittings and regulate the air out?

Been meaning to take some photos to share, just havent had time!

 

Built it before Epic, serviced our bikes myself and did not want to go hunting for an compressor .... or electricity.

I checked Stans at least every second day.

 

Basically you need:

2L Coke bottle ... empty ... brandy makes the coke taste better.

Tubeless Valve

High pressure hose or pump hose

Airgun or Compressor handle (R60 @ Midas)

Hose clamps

 

Will try and post some pics later ... I talk muchly with pretty picshas! ;)

You can get a basic bicycle tool kit from Sportsmans warehouse or even Game which will have a lot of the generic bicycle specific tools(chain whip etc) at an affordable price.

 

Those are disposable toolkits.

 

Use them once and then you dispose of it!

Built something similar, here is a pic of mine.

Screw it into a empty plastic coke bottle, clamp the cable, pump it to 5 bar using a normal pump. release clamp and it seats the tire.

What I used was:

  • 1 normal presta valve,
  • 1 presta valve with removable core
  • 2 meters fish tank tube
  • couple of cable ties 
  • clamp - to clamp the hose. I use a set of medical clamps, but you can use a vice grip or just fold the hose

This is how I got started.  My tools are now worth 5X what my bikes are!  One thing I have learnt (even before the bikes) - buy the best tools you can afford and then look after them. Try and get bike specific tools that fit onto a normal 1/2" socket drive (for BBs, cassettes etc).  They often have a hex head which you can clamp in a vice if needed.  Also you can hold them in place with a threaded rod and washers for really stubborn parts - like the 6 and 7 speed clusters on kids bikes.  Those cheaper ones with integrated handles wont last the course!  As for the coke bottle tire seater I saw a similar idea but using an old fire extinguisher as the receiver.

Those are fairly simple tasks depending on the level of service ie. Replacing fork bushing is not for the average Joe. If all you wanting to do is do a lower leg service then esay game.

 

Firts off you need to tell make and model of hubs, brakes, fork.

 

Fork - Fox RL 32

Brakes - Shimano XT

Hubs - Stans 3.3

 

Fork -

Depends on whether you want to do just a lower leg service or complete air side service etc.

 

As a start off the top of my head you'll need a long or hollow socket (can't remember size) and set of allan keys and a plastic mallet to remove the lower legs. Then a tyre leaver to remove the dust wipers and foam rings.

 

Brakes -

For Shimano you lucky, easiest brakes to bleed. Will need a 8 spanner, allan key and syringe or the shimano 50ml mineral oil bottle, a pice of plastic hose and a empty bottle help keep thing from getting messy.

 

Hubs -

Stans use allan keys or cone spanners depending on whether your hubs are QR or 15TA and a 12mm allan key if memory serves. Then a steel hammer and bearing punch. A socket the same size as the otter bearing race will help with putting the new ones in again.

 

YouTube is your friend. So spend a few hours watching videos and Fox, Shimano and Stans should all have channels with videos showing you how to service their components.

Going to be trying to build that DIY Air Chamber tonight, gonna use some PVC pipe (hope it does not blow up)

Second one looks neater but doesn’t have a regulator

 

PVC pipe is not suitable and creates sharp shards when it blows up.

Look at the one I made on page 5 , its held up for long now and really works great.

 

++ I can send it to be tested for defects .

 

 

The plastic bottle and pvc solutions potentially have lethal implications if the blow up.

 

 

I'm not saying A fire extinguisher does not BUT I only pump it up to half the normal working pressure and that is more than enough to pop two 650b wheels.

Thanks, tried the 1kg fire extinguisher, and it all seem to have worked, now just want to put some tape around it, or spray it that someone does not think it is a fire extinguisher anymore....

Overall I endorse the advice to use an old fire extinguisher. Air brake reservoirs from trucks also work well and easily available at scrap yards, but may be a bit bigger than you need. If you must use PVC pipe be aware that it is available in different pressure classes and the larger sizes above 90mm are not easily available in the higher pressure classes. You need to use the blue uPVC with grey solvent weld fittings,all in Class 16. If you have the facility to do PVC welding with sticks/heatgun then solvent weld, dry 24h and backweld all joints. Class 16 fittings/adapters are available that allow you to screw in standard threaded valves and steel or brass fittings.

 

If you make the whole gadget out of class 16 it will theoretically withstand 16bar but I wouldn't go past 4 or 5 bar. If you can't seat a tyre with that then something else is wrong. Keep the thing under a few layers of blanket when pressurised and in use.

 

Do not use white (drain piping) or light brown (non UV resistant pipe intended for burying) as these are not made to hold the pressures you will need.

 

Remember that you will blow the flanges off a lot of rims at pressures approaching 4 bar and up. If your mtb tyre doesn't seat with 3bar inside it then something is wrong. I find that wiping the rim and tyre with a wet soapy cloth just before inflation tends to seat it at much lower pressures than a dry fit.

I had a Vredestein Black Panther 26" tyre pop off the rim at a pressure of what showed as 4.5 bar on my tyre inflating gun. The bead left a red welt on my palm for about 4 days, and my ears stopped ringing about the same time.

The mistake I made was cranking the air delivery pressure screw all the way up on my compressor's air outlet, and just holding the inflator trigger down until the bead makes the popping sound when seating into the rim. This could have got to 7 bat easy with my compressor.

The best way to do it, and what I do now, is to adjust the air delivery pressure screw to 4 bar on my compressor's outlet, and if the bead doesn't "pop"into the seat, take the tyre off and look why.

It's normally old sealant stuck in the "hook" part of the rim, or just dry, and a good clean and lubication with water/Sunlight saves the day.

Bottom line: be careful! Compressed air can lead to big tears

DO NOT USE PVC - of any class..... even class 16 is not designed to take sudden pressure load changes..... it will eventually blow up - just when is the question..... not worth taking a risk - rather use a proper pressure vessel.

 

I am sick of stitching up idiots that do use it for air pipes.....
