Odinson Posted January 2, 2015 Share In most common law jurisdictions there was at one point in time the principle of "ignorantia juris non excusat" - meaning that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Therefore, you cannot claim innocence by stating that you did not know a specific action or omission was unlawful. Please guys, don't apply that type of thinking to trail etiquette. We know from Armpies that Old Man Methanol was a right chop, in that he knew he was riding up a DH trail. HOWEVER, if I were to go to Tokai and ride up a DH trail, where there is no signage indicating such, that does not mean that I'm wrong, because I wasn't aware of the fact. Just keep that in mind when out on the trails - don't immediately lash out in anger at other riders. First find out if they knew what they were doing and take it from there. Wyatt Earp Posted January 2, 2015 Share I'll engage you since you're clearly more open to logical discussion and Wyatt Earp is now trolling in stereo. My red light analogy served a purpose. Safety requires a known set of rules (in this case the route was marked as uni directional if I understand Mayhem correctly) rather than visible discouragement. Running a red light is illegal, it doesn't matter if you 'know' that it's safe because there are no other cars around or because it's only just turned red. That logic means that you're leaving the definition of 'safe' to each person's judgement which naturally varies. The guy coming the other way might decide that 2 seconds is safe. Someone else might think it's safe as long as he goes through really fast. You get my point. It's not up to riders to determine whether they can ride up a track that has been demarcated as a down track, regardless of whether they have the skillz, the experience, the awareness. All of those points (which I think Bianchi Man also made) are irrelevant in the same way that a person arguing they only JUST ran the red robot is irrelevant. I get your point about human psychology but as you say, making a track really hard to climb up might just be seen as a challenge by some super skilled cowboy. I really don't know what more can be done to stop the Darwin Award candidates other than clear signage. I'd be interested in suggestions. Right, car packed, time to head out. I seriously hope there aren't any hipsters heading up the tracks this weekend.Oh dear, the poor red light that is a very clear common known sign that says you can't go, something the whole world knows and understands and it now has commonality with a baboon attacked trail ,the river it now floweth over ............... Odinson Posted January 2, 2015 Share Armpies, your OP doesn't say how this altercation ended. Did you guys go your separate ways (him UP and you guys DOWN) or did you guys go BigShow and Bruce Lee on him and his body's somewhere in a hastily dug grave on the slopes of Tokai? Shem. But please, Justin, carry on. I support your right to ride up DH tracks, I think it has great spectator value.

Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted January 2, 2015 Share Armpies, your OP doesn't say how this altercation ended. Did you guys go your separate ways (him UP and you guys DOWN) or did you guys go BigShow and Bruce Lee on him and his body's somewhere in a hastily dug grave on the slopes of Tokai? He turned around and went in the correct direction, back out the way he came, all the while having his last word. He didn't finish shouting at us until he got back on to the trail. Admittedly, we did tell him as he was retreating thay all we wanted him to do was follow the rules of the trail. No fisticuffs and tbh if he had tried anything I'm sure Mark would have closed him down pretty quickly. As others have said - if his initial reaction had been just slightly different, I'm sure there would have been no raised voices and it'd have been a conversation on what the plans for the future are and what Chris Nixon was doing just next door for skills development etc etc etc. But his initial reaction to "sorry bro, this trail is downhill only" just set the tone for the entire argument. It only really escalated on our side when he tried to involve Ben (Mark's lightie, who wasn't feeling well) into the while thing by insinuating we do more damage by walking up the trails etc etc.
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted January 2, 2015 Share Again, I think this is more about HOW the toppie reacted rather than the trail marking, his climbing ability, general South African disregard for rules or Darwin bla bla bla.100 bazillion percent. If he'd have said "oh, sorry, I didn't know - why are they uni directional" etc etc it'd have been a very different encounter.

Barry Stuart Posted January 2, 2015 Share You are trying too hard, more tact and less bitch fit .Please don't interpret my comments as being sarcastic. I support your vision for the uphill downhilling scene. You're a maverick, a salmon swimming against the current of popular opinion, common sense and the direction of the trail. And as you climb those courses and people shout things at you, like "HOLY **** GET OUT THE WAAAAAY!" I want you to know that as long as you believe in yourself then I believe in you. The same way you believe in me. Because when you told me that I remind you of an album by an ageing rock flutist that I had to google because I'm three generations too young for your references the title I found was called Rupi's Dance. I don't know what kind of dance it is but it sounds fabulous and I'm not going to disappoint you. I will learn that Rupi's dance for you!
