Been riding tokai for 12 years and never been stopped on the mountain once by someone asking for a wildcard. I always have it with me but most of the time the guys at the gate dont even ask to see it

And I really cant see them being there at 5 am. Its still dark.....

Yesterday afternoon I headed towards the guard so that I can produce my card. At the same time a van pulled up and started talking to the guard which sounded like a very casual chat. I decided I would just ride on, but instead the guard shouted for me to stop. I did which I didnt have a problem with, but he continued with his casual chat!!. ANyways, in the past the guards wouldnt worry to stop you yesterday was a first for me.

I'm in very much the same boat, but hell, I'm not going to stop doing the things I love, so, yes, we PAY to play!

I think these fees are rediculous but as a community we are our own worst enemies because we just tend to roll over and take it. We have set precedent that we will just continue to pay and get very little in return. Quiet diplomacy doesn't work, we need to organise protest rides through Tokai forest - COSATU style!!!

That's quite an inflammatory first post.

Rather check the Tokai MTB site and work through your elected representatives to get changes you want. The "Looting and burning" approach will just get us all kicked out of Tokai!

It will be nice, if SANParks would listen or explain to us...

From R25 to R60 within a year?

Big bonus for SANPARKS... (Greedy pigs like ANC)

I feel sorry for the guys who work at the gate because they can't do anything....

I agree that the fees are ridiculous. Especially in light of the offerings across the bay and Durbanville. I tend to gravitate towards the protest type of response myself but I'm not sure that is the best approach.

Besides based on the attendance at build days you'll be lucky to get 20 people to come to a protest ride so it is almost guaranteed to blow up in your face. The fact is the cost to ride Tokai won't come back down to R45 and Sanparks won't be putting anything in to the trails so it's up to us if we want improvements.

So if you want improvements I'd recommend you do the following

  • Come to the election of the new committee in Feb and vote for who you think can get you what you want. Or better yet, if you think you can do a better job then throw your hat in the ring.
  • Come to the monthly build days
  • Donate to trail building. There's a donations on the TokaiMTB website.

The most effective "protest" for you would be to vote with your wallet and ride elsewhere. Nothing speaks louder than money and believe me they have noticed a decline in numbers.

Where did those numbers come from?

A year ago it was R45 already, can't argue with the sentiment though.

When is the next build day, February?

Edit - It has for sure been a less busy parking area than at this time last year, numbers do look down.

We're meeting on Thursday to discuss the next build day(s) and projects for the year.

But yes the next build will most likely be the 7th Feb.

I am not proposing looting and burning and I have my annual activity card for the record. I just think the costs are out of control and it needs to be voiced as such...
